Overview:
The Theatre and Speech Communication department at Salem State University invites applications for a full-time, temporary faculty position in Acting for the 2025-26 academic year, renewable annually for up to three years. We seek a dynamic teacher and theatre artist to join our collaborative department and teach undergraduate courses in acting, as well as other performance and theatre studies courses aligned with the candidate's expertise. The selected candidate will also direct productions, advise students, and participate in departmental initiatives and meetings.
Our department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) and offers a comprehensive curriculum with multiple degree options, including a BA and BFA in Theatre Performance and a new BA in Musical Theatre. We produce four fully mounted productions each academic year, in addition to various staged readings and student-driven projects. Our production season alternates annually between a musical and a Shakespeare production, offering students a wide range of performance experiences. Salem State is also an active participant in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF); our students routinely advance through regional rounds and compete at the national festival in Washington, D.C.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Candidates are required to perform duties in accordance with the MSCA contract. These include teaching, advising, scholarship/creative activity, and contributions to continuous improvement within the department and university. The standard teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester. Additional responsibilities include directing productions and mentoring students in performance and production work.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- MFA in Acting
- Two years of teaching experience in a higher education setting
- Two years of acting experience and development, including professional productions
- Experience with and commitment to teaching, supervising, and advising students
- Experience in directing theatrical productions in a higher education setting
Preferred Qualifications:
- MFA or PhD in an appropriate theatre discipline
- College-level teaching experience, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
- Experience teaching a multicultural population
- Demonstrated commitment to mentorship of young actors
- Theatre intimacy training
- Experience teaching courses in theatre appreciation, history and script analysis
- Strength and potential for excellence and leadership with community engagement and university services
- Demonstrated commitment to collaboration and collegiality
