Job Description
The state operated Massachusetts Veterans Home (MVH) at Chelsea is an independent state agency consisting of long-term care and a domiciliary which are independent living quarters for our veterans. The care and services provided by MVH are supported by an extraordinary group of staff working to meet the needs of our veterans.
At this time, the MVH at Chelsea is eager to hire a new Environmental Service Specialist II, joining their facilities team onsite.
As an Environmental Service Specialist II, your day-to-day tasks will include keeping buildings in clean and orderly condition, maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of floors, washing interior surfaces of buildings such as walls, ceilings and windows, maintaining grounds around buildings, emptying waste and recycling receptacles, as well as moving furniture and performing related work as required.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide on-the-job training and orientation to employees.
- Inspect assigned areas for cleanliness, adherence to safety standards and the need for maintenance and repair.
- Maintain records and/or logs on assigned unit activities.
- Keep buildings in clean and orderly condition by performing a combination of activities including cleaning assigned areas and making minor repairs to buildings using hand tools and equipment?
- Maintains the cleanliness and appearance of floors by sweeping and moping and by utilizing building custodial equipment such as polishers, buffers, vacuum cleaners, and carpet shampooers.
- Washes interior surfaces of buildings such as walls, ceilings, windows, furniture, shower chairs, fans, shower trolleys, walkers, beds, bedside tables, over bed tables, mechanical wheelchairs, vents etc. using appropriate supplies and equipment.
- Respond to emergencies such as spills or floods and assist in clean-up.
- Empties waste and recycling receptacles and transports contents to appropriate areas.
- Cleans toilets, lavatories, utility rooms, laundry rooms, patient rooms dining rooms elevators, offices etc. using appropriate supplies and equipment.
- Transport soiled linen to holding area.
- Transport clean and dirty laundry to appropriate areas.
- Re-move and re-hang window draperies and bedside curtains.
- Attending departmental training, annual orientation, safety training etc. as required.
May be assigned the following additional duties based on assignment:
- Operate elevators to pick up and deliver clothing, laundry, equipment etc.
- Maintain grounds around buildings by cutting grass, raking leaves, weeding, and thinning flower beds or gardens etc.
- Perform outside duties such as washing windows, sweeping walks, shoveling snow and ice from walks/stairs/ramps and fire escapes, and picking up trash.
- Perform related duties such as loading or unloading equipment and supplies from vehicles, moving furniture, setting up furniture and assembling furniture such as beds, desks, cabinets, etc.
Working Conditions:
Required to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time, lift and carry heavy objects, work outdoors or indoors in all types of weather. Required to work under conditions of hazard such as slippery or wet floors. May be required to work varied shifts, weekends, holidays, or nights.
Qualifications at Hire:
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to understand and apply the policies, procedures, rules, regulations etc. governing assigned unit activities.
- Ability to establish and maintain a harmonious working relationship with others.
- Ability to deal tactfully with others.
- Ability to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time.

- Manual dexterity.
- Mechanical aptitude.
Qualifications Acquired on Job:
- Knowledge of the policies, procedures, rules and regulations governing assigned unit activities.
- Knowledge of the methods followed in building custodial work
- Knowledge of the types and uses of materials, tools and equipment used in building custodial work.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in building custodial work.
- Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools used in building custodial work such as pliers, hammers wrenches etc.
- Knowledge of record keeping procedures
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of supervision

Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in building custodial or institution housekeeping work.
