Position Summary

The Chief of Staff services as a strategic advisor and right hand to the Sheriff, providing high-level administrative, operational, and strategic support. This role ensures effective coordination across divisions, oversees special projects, manages communications, and acts as a liaison between the Sheriff and internal/external stakeholders. The Chief of Staff plays a critical role in enhancing the efficiency and effectiveness of the Sheriff's Office.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Supports the Sheriff in developing and implementing department-wide goals, priorities and policies. Coordinate strategic initiatives and monitor progress toward goals.

Serves as the primary point of contact for the Sheriff, manages schedule, briefings, and information flow. Prepares reports, presentations and responses to internal and external inquiries.

Leads and manages special projects and initiatives as assigned by the Sheriff, including interdepartmental programs, community engagement initiatives, and policy development.

Acts as liaison between the Sheriff and elected officials, law enforcement partners, community leaders, and department heads. Facilitates communication and ensure timely follow-up on issues.

Provides leadership support to command staff and administrative divisions. Identifies process improvements and helps implement best practices in operations and administration.

Assists the Sheriff in coordinating responses during emergencies, ensuing clear communication and logistical support across relevant agencies.

May assist in high-level personnel decisions, performance reviews of senior staff, and internal investigations as directed by the Sheriff.

Manages the MAT program

Job Competencies:

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and political acumen.

Ability to work efficiently both independently and with others and follow written and oral instructions.

Complete knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and functions.

Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate schedules and meetings.

Experience working in or closely with a sheriff's office or other law enforcement or government agency.

Knowledge of government structure and interagency collaboration.

Familiarity with technology and data systems.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Organized with attention to detail.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Ability to prioritize and problem solve in a high-pressure environment.

Ability to exercise discretion and good judgement handling confidential information.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Public Administration, Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or related area of study is required.

Master's degree preferred.

Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in law enforcement, public administration, or executive-level management.

A minimum of five (5) years of experience in supporting executive level staff and/or executive level administrator is preferred.

Strong knowledge of local government operations and criminal justice systems.

Proven leadership, strategic planning, and project management abilities.

Or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in a standard office setting with frequent travel within the county and across Massachusetts.

Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required.

Subject to high pressure situations and urgent decision making needs.
