The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Carpenter II - Central Region to perform the following duties:

About the Division of Design and Engineering:

Continuing over a century of visionary land stewardship, DCR's Division of Design & Engineering (D&E) collaborates with colleagues within DCR, other agencies, and communities across the state to plan, design, build, and maintain a diversity of outdoor recreational experiences and unique landscapes throughout the Commonwealth. In addition, our staff is responsible for maintaining public infrastructure including dams, seawalls, parkways and park roads, sidewalks and trails, and stormwater systems. This requires employing a diverse range of talent including architects, engineers, landscape architects, planners, tradespeople as well as business, finance and administrative support who work together to support D&E's mission. Our staff is unified by a passion for providing access to high quality public open space and outdoor recreation for all ages and abilities, and strive to improve visitor experience, enhance universal accessibility, and help modernize DCR's facilities and resources to be more carbon neutral, energy independent, and resilient to climate change.

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Carpenter II supervises and performs general carpentry work at agency properties and inspects agency structures to perform preventive maintenance.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and repair pools, rinks, playgrounds, comfort stations and other agency properties.
  • Estimate cost and time to complete work orders.
  • Supervise employees of lower grade.
  • Follow industry standards to complete jobs in a safe, timely and professional manner.
  • Properly complete and submit CAMIS (Capital Asset Management Information System) forms in a timely manner.
  • Keeps tools and equipment clean, safe and in good working order; including assigned vehicles used.
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of tools and standards used in carpentry.
  • Ability to supervise workers of lower grade.
  • Knowledge of sites and locations of agencies infrastructure; facilities, pools, rinks, etc.
  • Excellent communications skills, verbal and written.
  • Ability and willingness to learn advance computer/software applications, online platforms and systems for advancing technology.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision.
  • Access to reliable transportation to and from DCR sites and non-DCR sites.

Preferred License and/or Certifications:

Current and valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator's license.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

Substitutions:
I. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, vocational or vocational school at high school level or higher, with a major in carpentry, woodworking, or cabinetmaking may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.
