Primary Duties: The Gaming Enforcement Division investigates and prosecutes criminal conduct related to expanded gaming in the Commonwealth, including violations of G.L. c. 23K, G.L. c. 23N, G.L. c. 267A, and G.L. c. 271, and other illegal activity, such as gaming-related financial crime, organized crime, corruption, and money laundering. In recent years, it has primarily used criminal enforcement tools to address illicit gambling and associated criminal wrongdoing. As gaming moves from physical casinos to online platforms, and with the proliferation of online illegal gambling, the Attorney General's Office, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, has determined that civil enforcement tools should be brought to bear against platforms, operators, and related entities that are failing to comply with state law. Thus, the Attorney General's Office is seeking Assistant Attorneys General to lead its efforts in a new Civil Enforcement Unit.

The Civil Enforcement Unit (CEU) will investigate and analyze impermissible gaming activity in the Commonwealth, with a focus on online gaming products that fail to comply with state law. The CEU will propose and carry out civil enforcement action, often acting in collaboration with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission. In addition, the CEU will be expected to explore the express cause of action granted to the Attorney General under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The Civil Enforcement Unit will work in close collaboration with the Attorney General's Public Protection & Advocacy Bureau and the Gaming Enforcement Division.
