Job Description
The Massachusetts Teachers' Retirement System (MTRS) is the pension plan for the Commonwealth's public school educators. The plan provides retirement, disability and survivor benefits to more than 71,000 recipients and maintains and services retirement accounts for over 102,000 active members and 35,000 inactive members.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Working under the general supervision of the Director and Assistant Director of the Transfers, Refunds and Enrollments Unit ("TREU"), the Account Analyst serves all members of the MTRS as part of the team responsible for all aspects of member account maintenance including, but not limited to enrollments, transfers-in/out, incorrect assessment backlog resolution, account refunds, and required minimum distributions under the Internal Revenue Code.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Researching and resolving newly added and backlogged incorrect assessment (contribution rate discrepancies) cases
- Expediting cases for members retiring, refunding, or transferring out of the MTRS
- Assisting with Refunds, Transfers between the MTRS and other Retirement Systems, Minimum Distributions, Account Adjustments, and other areas as needed
- Assisting with the researching and processing of RetirementPlus reviews
- Processing and calculating incorrect assessment refunds and bills
- Providing customer service follow-up to members after sending out rate change, refund, and invoice correspondence
- Responding professionally to a variety of written and telephone inquiries from MTRS staff, other retirement systems, employers, and members
- Monitoring and maintaining unit tracking spreadsheets
- Performing account research and providing appropriate follow-up
- Ensuring enrollment compliance for members that have not completed their mandatory enrollment and working collaboratively on enrollment outreach projects
- Follow-up with members with uncashed refund checks
- Maintaining accurate and up-to-date personal information for our membership, and updating accounts with detailed notes when necessary
- Participating fully in agency projects, service group meetings, work group committees, and training programs as assigned
- Will acquire a continually increasing knowledge of MGL, Chapter 32, and Board regulations relating to each job function
- Performing other duties as required
- Implementing special projects as assigned by the Director and Assistant Director of the Transfers, Refunds, and Enrollment Unit.
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree preferred or an Associate's Degree with equivalent relevant experience
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficient in Microsoft 360 Apps (Word, TEAMS, Outlook)
- Intermediate experience, or greater, in Excel, is required (e.g., advanced formula lookups, sorting, filtering, data validation, recording and running basic macros, creating and manipulating pivot tables).
- Excellent mathematical and analytical skills
- Excellent organizational skills, flexible, and able to handle a multitude of tasks
- Desire to work in an environment committed to teamwork and quality service
- Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, members, and the public
- Ability to follow instructions and function both independently and as a member of a team
- Ability to maintain harmonious relationships with the members, employers, and MTRS staff

- Ability to travel to and from the workplace
EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
New hires are required to report to the office five days per week for their first 90 calendar days of employment. Thereafter, they may apply for a hybrid telework schedule (in-office approximately two - three days per week) dependent upon the unit's operational and staffing needs. Hours of work are flexible, but are generally, Monday through Friday, either 7 AM to 3 PM, 8 AM to 4 PM or 9 AM to 5 PM. This position may require extended hours.
