The Boeing Company seeks a Manager for Manager - Space Sensor Payloads Integration & Test development in Huntington Beach, CA.

This position will lead a high-performing team of engineers and staff within the Payload Products & Technologies (PP&T) organization under Boeing Research & Technology's (BR&T) Mission Systems (MS) organization. BR&T Payload Products & Technologies develops and captures technology for designing disruptive Mission Systems solutions. Focused on visible and infrared spectrum EO/IR sensors operating in Space and Air domains, our growing team is leaping ahead of the competition with an exceptional mix of mission architecture, sensor design and algorithms for advanced image and data processing.

This position will expand the leadership team of a dynamic organization with multiple project teams. Boeing Research & Technology is Boeing's advanced, centralized Research & Development organization. The Mission Systems & Autonomy team drives integrated technology development and rapidly transitions capabilities in areas such as artificial intelligence, autonomy, cyber security, advanced electronics, communications, networking, platform subsystems and digital aviation. This position may require up to 10% travel.

Position Responsibilities:
  • Sensors and Payloads Production: Assembly, Integration and Test - Leads and supports hands-on space sensors and payloads integration and testing as well as integration planning. Entails a strong foundation in spacecraft and/or payload mechanical, electro-optical and environmental testing products. Leads production operations from concept definition through delivery utilizing a disciplined systems thinking approach.
  • Product development - Collaborate with business leaders, chief engineer/architect and engineering teams to define and describe the technology and product portfolio development objectives and plan. Leverage existing IP and product evolution to expand Boeing's EO/IR product portfolio extending into the space, air and sea domains. Will embrace/exercise disciplined development methods that drive innovation results in rapid development
  • Talent - Attract, develop and retain exceptional talent. Lead and grow high-performing teams in technology innovation, product evolution and program execution. Demonstrates exceptional leadership traits, active listening, inspires and motivates.
  • Programs execution - Adapt current program execution efforts to streamline and increase the effectiveness of the organization's delivery performance. With emphasis on digital engineering/digital twin, the PP&T SE/EM manager will create and codify the operating model shaped to ensure alignment with organization delivery, development and growth objectives. Develops and maintains relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders and suppliers. Provides oversight and approval of technical approaches, products and processes. Manages, develops and motivates employees and mid-level managers.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Manages employees performing engineering and integration activities in the area of Spacecraft Sensor and Payload assembly, integration and test.
  • Develops and executes integrated departmental plans, policies and procedures and provides input on departmental business and technical strategies, goals, objectives.
  • Familiar with electro-optical sensor and payload functional and environmental test. Includes setup and calibration of functional test STE, interferometers, optical benches, Thermotron, vacuum chambers, harness testers, current probes, multimeters, shop fixtures and handling aids.
  • Proficient in defining and implementing shop floor procedures and work instructions. Includes ESD, powered and RF radiative testing, proof load, continuity testing and environmental testing.
  • Lead the development of integration and test procedures
  • Lead the definition and implementation of skills development, certification and training for production engineers and technicians
  • Apply lessons learned to the improvement of integration and test procedures
  • Lead the develop of data acquisition equipment, processing tools and algorithms
  • Generate calibration procedures and software
  • Guide others in the design of test hardware, software and systems to achieve test requirements
  • Acquires resources for department activities, provides technical management of suppliers and leads process improvements.
  • Develops and maintains relationships and partnerships with customers, stakeholders, peers, partners and direct reports.
  • Provides oversight and approval of technical approaches, products and processes.
  • Manages, develops and motivates employees and first-level managers.
  • Demonstrated skills in verbal and written communications for numerous audiences

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at the Huntington Beach, CA site.

This position requires an active U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active). Must be able to get a SSBI (Single Scope Background Investigation) clearance.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science
  • Production engineering experience
  • Leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited course of study in engineering, mechanical, aerospace, mathematics, or physics
  • 7+ years of experience with the production of mission systems, sensors, or sensing systems
  • 12+ years of production experience
  • Experience using production and engineering structured processes and developing and managing program plans to meet organization objectives within the allocated budget and schedule.
  • Previously demonstrated leadership of space programs and product delivery activitie
  • Strong communication (both written and verbal)
  • Electro-optical production engineering skills
  • Experience in the design and development of EO/IR sensor systems
  • Experience working on research and development or prototype programs
  • Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) skills

Pay is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

Summary pay range: $166,600 - $225,400
