Job Description:
The AVP, Credit Risk Management is responsible for supporting Corporate Debt Finance. This role works closely with first line Corporate Investment Banking Credit (CIB Credit) and other functions in Risk Management in the management of TDS Corporate Debt Finance portfolio and ensures effective decision-making consistent with TDBGs overall credit risk appetite and policies.
Depth & Scope:
- Reviews and adjudicates credit submissions within discretionary limits and ensures requests are within business line strategies, credit risk policies and risk appetite
- Works closely with first line Corporate Investment Banking Credit (CIB Credit) and other functions in Risk Management in the management of TDS Corporate Debt Finance portfolio and ensure effective decision-making consistent with TDBGs overall credit risk appetite and policies
- Effectively challenges credit submissions to ensure credit risk and structures are adequately assessed by performing independent risk analysis, and applying relevant policies and lending guidelines of the Bank, including assessment of the strength of sponsor/asset manager, Agent Bank (as applicable), robustness of risk management systems and surveillance, quality of collateral loan pools, transaction structure including terms and borrowing base concentration limits including industry and single name exposures
- Acts as an internal subject matter expert on credit, proactively assesses credit issues within Corporate Debt Finance structures and recommends strategies for minimizing risk, adjusting exposure on an Agent or sponsor/asset manager basis; acts as a crosser of approval/decline of credit within assigned discretionary limits; recommends on situations requiring approval of Risk Management
- Develops and maintains sound knowledge of the private credit, middle market and broadly syndicated loan markets, keeps apprised of industry trends and of the related Corporate Debt Finance lending structures
- Acts as a trusted advisor in sharing knowledge, perspectives and advice as needed on credit products and deal structures with other groups where appropriate
- Engages in the development of appropriate risk frameworks including policies, limits, Agent and/or sponsor criteria and collateral pool eligibility criteria and concentration limits
- Ensures risk ratings are assigned accurately and works with the first line on the development of appropriate rating methodologies
- Contributes to the development and oversees the utilization of risk monitoring systems and processes as it relates to assessment and management of credit risk
- Monitors and evaluates performance of credit facilities including sponsor/asset manager and collateral pool performance
- Plays a proactive role in initiating appropriate action on major accounts where the risk to the bank is deteriorating
- Ensures all matters relating to material risk be communicated and escalated in a timely, accurate and forthright manner and within established governance frameworks
- Acts as a key Risk Management contact for TDS Corporate Debt Finance, address issues and escalate where appropriate; liaises with business on implementation of policy solutions
- Works effectively with other areas of TD Securities and Risk Management to assist TDBG in maintaining an optimum level of risk assessment skills
- Shares knowledge both proactively and responsively about the banks risk appetite for industry sectors and/or products/deal structures, as well as changes in general risk matters
- Develops productive working relationships across TD Securities, articulate credit policy, and directly participate in structuring as necessary to protect the Banks interests
- Contributes to the overall Credit Risk Management team by sharing knowledge and expertise, contributing to sound decisions, acting as a trusted adviser to the business, developing and maintaining productive internal and external relationships
- Effectively challenge, propose and champion projects to improve efficiencies, in order to provide more effective business support and credit risk management oversight
- Oversight of CRM's monitoring and control procedures and documentation
- Maintains understanding of key risk and risk-related issues through continual review of risk reports/related data and dialogue with relevant parties
- Understands and comply with TD Policies, regulatory and compliance requirements
- Develops and fosters strong relationships to improve the understanding and communication of credit risk and/or other key risk management issues
- Participates in regulatory and internal audit exams of the Credit Risk Management function

Education & Experience:
- Graduate or undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline
- 15+ years experience with direct Credit Risk experience preferred
- Relevant industry or risk management experience and/or accreditation
- Business Acumen - Proficient understanding of the risk management landscape and disciplines, in particular credit risk, at TD including an in-depth knowledge of TD Securities and a strong understanding of Corporate Debt Finance transactions and capital markets (would be considered an asset)
- Relationship Building - demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with internal partners and business segments
- Execute with speed - ability to work in a fast paced environment, manage details but can filter out extraneous information and efficiently move requests through the credit decisioning process.
