Life Science Research Professional 3 (1 Year Fixed-Term)
Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 3 to perform complex functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct a major portion of the research project(s). The Department of Radiology at Stanford University is comprised of world-renowned people and programs. As we plan to play a very important role in the development of personalized medicine, by moving advances from the laboratories to the clinic for improved patient-centric care, our Life Science Research Professional plays a vital role in helping our Department accomplish this. Under the direction of the department, this position performs basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct and analyze experiments.
Duties include:
- Develop machine learning software to efficiently recognize features in human images.
- Provide assistance to investigators in the design and development of research studies, and responsible for data analysis and record-keeping.
- Design new research studies in collaboration with the principal investigator, project scientists, and research associates.
- Carry out independent research projects as warranted.
- Responsible for submission of protocols and implementation of studies, including data analysis and drafting of manuscripts.
- Directly supervise various personnel during experiments.
- Ensure safety, IACUC, AALAC, EH&S, and CUPA compliance in research study area.
- Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the results section.
- Supervise (either formally or informally) staff or students as needed, including oversight and instruction on techniques, as well as consultation on project work. Serve as technical resource for other research staff.
- Perform complex (lab and/or field) experiments for a major portion of the research project.
- Maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
- Interpret and analyze results, often where few guidelines exist.
- Based on prior results, contribute to development of new research protocols and procedures or adaptation of existing protocols.
- Make recommendations on plan design and/or research direction to principal investigator.
- Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
- Participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
- Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; present findings for lab work group.
- Oversee supply and equipment budget under minimal supervision of principal investigator or business manager.
- Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
- Formally supervise and train new staff or students as needed, including hiring, performance management, and related duties. Provide instruction on techniques and consultation on project work.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
BS in engineering degree and MS degree that includes analystics and one year of relevant industry experience including machine learning; or PhD in related science field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
- Experience in the development and implementation of machine learning code.
- Skills to organize information and keep accurate records for each experiment.
- Excellent organizational and time management skill.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills to coordinate with a wide range of personnel, including subordinates, supervisors, faculty, post-docs, students, and research animal staff.
- Excellent computer skills using spreadsheet, database, and word processing software; experience with Windows and DOS; Experience with Python or C, SQL, R, Tableau, MongoDB, NoSQL, Google Cloud, PySpark.
- Ability to learn and follow procedures with minimal supervision; demonstrated ability to understand and follow written procedures and verbal instructions.
- Skills to clean, order supplies for, and maintain organization within a research lab.
- Skills to directly supervise employees and to indirectly supervise a variety of researchers and collaborators on multiple, concurrent in vivo studies.
- General computer skills, experience with databases and scientific applications, and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
- Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
- Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance is essential.
- Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
- Developing project management skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
- Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
- Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
- Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
- Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
- Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
- Position may require repetitive motion.

The expected pay range for this position is $100,082 to $118,812 per annum.
