Title: Part-Time Instructor, Math

Department: High School Scholars

Reports To: Senior Manager of Teaching and Learning

Compensation: $40/hr

FLSA: Part-time, Seasonal

Location: Guilford County, North Carolina (Remote)

Summer Semester Dates: Asynchronous Training in June; Orientation: June 18 evening; Synchronous Instruction: July 1-July 31.

LOCATION/HOURS

This is apart-time, remote position based out of our North Carolina office location. It is expected that position duties will be performed remotely. Occasional travel to the office may be required for meetings and events with the understanding that SEO will consult government and public health advisories to help us determine the extent to which it is safe to carry out in-person and onsite activities.

POSITION OVERVIEW 

Instructors will join SEO’s community of passionate educators to implement a rigorous college prep curriculum for motivated and driven high school students.  Using our original curriculum and a student-centered approach to teaching and learning, instructors play an integral part in supporting our Scholars’ journeys to a competitive college and beyond. Instructors promote depth of understanding and skill acquisition by serving as a coach and facilitator of learning. Instructors teach Math for 9th or 10th grade Scholars.

SEO North Carolina is a bichronous program for Scholars, with occasional community days facilitated in person, but Instructor’s lessons are held 100% online, facilitated through Zoom. Scholars will engage in synchronous and asynchronous learning with the academic leadership and support of our Instructors.

 

COURSES

Instructors will be placed depending on their self-reported proficiency and demo lesson.

The math courses offered at SEO include:

  • Numbers and Operations, Graphs and Relationships, and Algebra/Pattern and Structure Courses
    • Skills include: properties of numbers; expressions, equations, and identities; ratio and rate; percentages; proportional reasoning; irrational numbers; linear, quadratic, and exponential functions (including compound growth formula); algebraic representation of functions; graphing functions and identifying key characteristics; modeling real-world situations with functions; systems of equations and inequalities; algebra with exponents; fractional exponents and roots; algebra with rational expressions and equations; properties 2D and 3D geometric figures; introduction to coordinate geometry.
  • Trigonometry, Precalculus, and SAT Math Courses
    • Skills include: triangle geometry and special triangles; trigonometric functions; inverse trig functions; radian measure; the unit circle; graphing and modeling with sine and cosine functions; unit analysis; function notation, including function composition and inverse functions; characteristics of graphs; transformations of graphs; average rate of change; introduction to limits; introduction to the derivative and the power rule; and content covered on the new digital SAT.

For Summer 2024, the following math courses will be offered:

  • 10th Math: Graphs and Relationships
  • 11th Math: Pre-Calc

 

PROGRAMMING DATES, TIMES, AND HOURS

  • Self-guided Asynchronous Instructor Training: New Instructional staff will complete Asynchronous Training that equates to 10 hours of work. This can be completed on your own time and will be completed prior to the start of programming.
  • Instructor Orientations: June 18, 5:30-7:30pm via Zoom
  • Instruction: July 1-July 31
  • Our program will be closed for the national holiday on July 4 & 5th.

The Instructors’ weekly hours are made up of standard and flex expectations, varying based on the programming weeks. Instructors receive up to 33hr/week.

  • Standard Hours are when the instructor must be working synchronously with staff or students
    • Monday-Thursday, 8:30am-1:30pm
    • Friday Professional Development, 3 hours
    • 5 Hours a day, 4x a week + 3 Hours PD = 23 Standard Hours per week.
  • Flex Hours make up the additional “instructor work” educators know go into the job. This is time spent preparing for the lesson, grading, entering gradebook data, writing Scholar feedback, communicating with staff and Scholars, etc. These are hours put in outside of the required schedule and can be completed asynchronously throughout the week.
    • 10 Flex Hours allotted per week.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Synchronous Teaching – Teach four math blocks on Saturdays via Zoom (9:40am-3:05pm); occasionally co-facilitate with an Associate Instructor. Follow provided lesson plans and meet lesson objectives, abiding by SEO’s articulated criteria for rigorous instruction and student engagement. Hold Scholars to high expectations, use protocols for student-driven discussion and group work, and promote depth of understanding via questioning. Zoom video-conferencing will be used to provide online, synchronous instruction in all classes.
  • Asynchronous Academic Support – Provide intentional academic support by hosting after-school office hours, engaging in online learning practices including discussion boards and other online learning tools, and building cycles of consistent feedback and accountability in the learning experience during asynchronous learning.
  • Navigate Instructional Technologies – Learn and efficiently utilize our instructional technologies such as Zoom (video conferencing and chat), Brightspace (Learning Management System),  Desmos, and GSuit applications.
  • Content Preparation – Read, internalize, and practice all lesson plans and materials provided by SEO prior to teaching. Implement thoughtful adjustments to pacing and activities based on specific student needs.
  • Grading and Record-Keeping – Calculate grades according to rubrics and stipulations in provided lesson plans. Provide actionable, growth-oriented feedback to students. Complete all grading in a timely manner (1 week turnaround) and keep the electronic gradebook up to date on Brightspace (our LMS).
  • Classroom Culture – Project an energetic, engaging, and approachable persona to promote students’ connection to the content, investment in the learning experience, and positive relationship to all members of the community.
  • Collaboration with SEO Staff and Other Instructors – Plan and work alongside an Associate Instructor to build optimal experiences for Scholar learning in co-teaching and/or single instruction models. Attend all scheduled meetings, professional development trainings, check-ins, and debriefs and respond to all emails and Zoom chats in a timely manner.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in content related field
  • Educator or youth-development work with high school-aged students
  • Online Course Facilitation Experience
  • Comfortable with and skilled at working with and navigating technological learning systems
  • Understanding and practice of student-centered pedagogy
  • Expertise and depth of knowledge in Advanced high school-level Mathematics

Preferred:

  • Secondary Education Degree and high school teaching experience
  • Knowledge and experience with Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
  • Certifications, PD course completions, and/or tertiary education in Instructional Technologies
  • At least 2+ years of Online Learning (or e-learning) Instruction, other than Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) at the start of the Pandemic
  • North Carolina resident with teaching experience in NC schools.

COMPENSATION

Instructors are compensated on a competitive hourly rate of $40/hr for up t0 33 hrs/week.

THE HIRING PROCESS

  • Phase 2: Phone Screening with Talent Acquisitions
  • Phase 3: 1 Hour Interview & Demo Lesson with SEO’s Curriculum & Instruction team. You will receive an SEO synchronous online learning lesson plan using Desmos, an educational technology tool, for Math to prepare for a Demo Lesson held on Zoom.
  • Phase 4: Update on Application and/or offer letter sent.
