This is an on-site position, requiring your presence at the University to effectively manage HR operations for a large and diverse workforce.

As the Human Resources Lead for a staff of 300+ full-time & part-time unionized hourly employees, 250+ student employees, and 20 full-time hourly management and/or support employees for University of Vermont Dining Services, you will work closely with an HR Coordinator and other administrative support staff to manage all HR functions. This includes union relations, recruitment, compliance, training, employee engagement, and much more.

The ideal candidate will have union experience, particularly in CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement), as well as expertise in training, payroll, progressive discipline, and labor relations. Strong organizational skills, leadership, and problem-solving abilities are essential for success in this role.

What You'll Do

  • Union Relations & Compliance: Manage all aspects of labor relations for unionized employees, including grievance procedures, union negotiations, and adherence to Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA).
  • Recruitment & Staffing: Lead recruitment efforts for union and student employees, ensuring a consistent talent pipeline for frontline roles. Ensure E-Verify compliance and manage the hiring process to maintain efficiency.
  • Employee Relations & Engagement: Drive employee engagement initiatives, working directly with staff to resolve concerns and improve retention. Support the DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) goals by fostering an inclusive and positive work culture.
  • Training & Development: Develop and implement training programs for unionized and student employees, ensuring compliance and career development.
  • Payroll & Administration: Oversee payroll management using Kronos, working with managers for final approvals. Troubleshoot payroll discrepancies and ensure compliance with all labor laws.
  • Managerial Support: Provide HR support for 30 managers, offering guidance on HR policies, employee relations, and performance management.
  • Labor Relations Problem-Solving: Proactively manage labor relations issues, offering solutions that address employee concerns while balancing the needs of the union and the organization.
  • DEI & Networking: Actively contribute to the DEI Plan, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workforce. Engage in networking opportunities to stay updated on HR best practices.
  • HR Process Management: Ensure the HR process moves efficiently through recruitment, onboarding, training, and compliance, maintaining a quick pace while ensuring high-quality service.

What You Bring

  • Union Experience Required: Must have significant experience working with unionized employees, including strong knowledge of Union and Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA).
  • Experience in Blue-Collar Workforce: Demonstrated experience managing large, blue-collar, hourly staff, preferably in hospitality or a similar environment.
  • HR Expertise: Experience in training, payroll administration, progressive discipline, and managing employee relations in a unionized setting.
  • Labor Relations Expertise: Strong knowledge of grievance procedures, labor relations, and contract negotiations.
  • Organized & Strong Leadership: Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple HR priorities. Strong leadership with a focus on employee engagement.
  • Recruitment & E-Verify Compliance: Proven experience in recruitment for hourly positions and ensuring compliance with E-Verify.
  • DEI Support: Experience supporting and advancing DEI initiatives in the workplace.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in Kronos payroll systems and other HR software. Strong skills in MS Office and HRIS tools.
  • Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience.

Qualifications & Requirements

Minimum Education Requirement - Associate's Degree or equivalent experience

Minimum Management Experience - 2 years

Minimum Functional Experience - 2 years in HR
