What's the role

The Safeguarding Focal Point position is designed to apply technical capabilities toward evaluating potential process safety risks and preventing adverse impacts and incidents. A key focus of this role is to help advance the overall process safety journey by providing strong technical safety assurance to validate that effective process safety systems and barriers are implemented and maintained at Shell Norco.

The role is responsible for monitoring, executing, and improving the Safeguarding work process for the site, as well as providing Process Safety leadership in the Norco PSM team through supporting team members and other PSM work processes, and mentoring other PSM staff in technical and process safety topics. The focal point plays a key role in supporting safeguarding across all areas of the site (including run and maintain, and projects).

What you'll be doing

  • Maintain an overall site strategy for SGM development and updates
  • Act as the site custodian for the Safeguarding database (Salus) and Flare model
  • Maintain safeguarding studies and track closing of concerns and deficiencies utilizing FIT4 software
  • Provide consultancy for safeguarding projects
  • Build into existing MOC and HEMP work processes to ensure SGMs are updated based on project as-built information
  • Demonstrate leadership in the site alternative relief mitigation process and develop and provide communication and training for process stakeholders
  • Participate in investigations associated with safeguarding system failures
  • Work across the site to improve safeguarding performance and help ensure this equipment exists as valid barriers
  • Understand corporate resources and contacts relative to safeguarding and facilitate use of these resources when necessary
  • Understand, support, and embed global safeguarding-related policies and standards into the site
  • Train operators, crafts, and other engineers in principles of safeguarding, their responsibilities, and the importance of timely, competent execution of those responsibilities
  • Support updates to the site flare model and work with Flare SMEs and qualified consultants for updates to flare models as the site Flare Model Focal Point
  • Work with discipline leads and operations on managed change to ensure proper safeguarding of process equipment
  • Participate in PHAs and other HazOps when safeguarding expertise is required

  • Work as an autonomous safety professional, translating guidelines and standards into practice and solving common safety challenges
  • Work within the SEAM Framework and policies under defined directions while receiving occasional guidance on techniques
  • Support various process safety initiatives for the site


What we need from you
  • Must have legal authorization to work in the USA on a full-time basis for anyone other than the current employer
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in Manufacturing Process Engineering or Technical Safety Support. At least 3 years of experience in Safeguarding Engineering is preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering; Chemical Engineering is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a proven track record of working well with Operations
  • Experience in Downstream plant operations is desirable
  • Proficiency with computer software/IT tools (SALUS)
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment while properly prioritizing and delivering
  • Able to shift properly between analysis and implementation


The base salary range for this position is $122, 000 - $182, 000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.

For regular full-time or regular part-time employees of the Company (participating companies as listed in the Summary Plan Description), insurance coverage options include medical, dental, vision coverage, life Insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs. Employees also participate in a company pension plan and a 401(k) plan. Paid leave includes up to 6 weeks of paid vacation time, up to 11 paid holidays, and parental leave offering 16 weeks of paid leave for birthing parents, and 8 weeks of paid leave for non-birthing parents.

Additionally, employees are eligible for short-term disability leave for up to 26 weeks at 100% or 50% of base pay as well as Long-Term Disability insurance. Shell also offers other compensation such financial reimbursement for adoption, wellness, education, and personal learning expenses, and some roles are eligible for discretionary long-term incentives. For interns, eligible benefits include medical, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, Business Travel Accident Insurance, and Occupational Accidental Death Benefit programs; participation in a 401(k) plan; and paid leave for up to 11 paid holidays.
