Why is the Process Technician role important to us?

Shapeways is looking for a Process Technician to bring a mix of artistic craftsmanship and technical process expertise to our production facility in Livonia. This role is pivotal in bridging the gap between the art of body paint and the science of 3D printing, ensuring that each custom product not only meets but exceeds our high-quality standards.

The Process Technician will be responsible for the end-to-end execution of our 3D printing manufacturing process, transforming virtual models into tangible, high-quality products. This role requires a blend of technical skills and creative finesse, particularly in prepping and painting finished 3D-printed items.

In this role, you will:

  • Collaborate with Supply Chain to optimize production schedules, balancing customer lead times and costs.
  • Evaluate the printability of customer models considering material specifications.
  • Schedule and operate 3D printers for maximum efficiency and output.
  • Manage materials inventory and prepare the print substrate for production runs.
  • Lead post-production processes, ensuring timely and high-quality completion and shipment.
  • Perform rigorous quality control checks on both products and equipment.
  • Drive process improvements and automation to scale our manufacturing capabilities.
  • Maintain 3D printing equipment, minimizing downtime and developing preventative maintenance practices.
  • Offer cross-departmental operational support and contribute to post-processing tasks using basic shop tools.
  • Prepare various parts for the painting process, applying auto body prepping and painting skills.

You might be a good fit if you have/are:

  • A vocational degree or Bachelor's in a technical or operations field.
  • Experience with basic shop tools and equipment, particularly in auto body prepping and painting.
  • Knowledge of 3D/design software is preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a 3D printing environment is preferred.
  • An understanding of KPI-driven performance and prioritization based on delivery requirements.
  • A proactive approach to daily tasks with a strong sense of ownership within a team environment.
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to understand and operate industrial 3D printers.
  • The capacity to address broader supply chain and production challenges.
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and hands-on problem-solving capabilities.
