Position Summary:

The incumbent executes automation engineering activities for strategic capital projects and/or site Ignition related projects within the Toronto Engineering & Technical Services Organization. This position is responsible to lead as the Ignition systems automation subject matter expert and manage development, concept, design, commissioning, qualification and maintenance related to Ignition SCADA systems.

This position will be coordinate and be responsible for interfacing with different trades (architecture/building, mechanical, electrical, ITS, maintenance, process engineering, operations, and Manufacturing Technology); to ensure the correct installation of all automation and associated equipment where adhering to established regulatory compliance requirements.

The incumbent is also responsible for developing appropriate solutions to satisfy the needs of internal customers in accordance with company guidelines and procedures, and within budget and schedule commitments. The incumbent is accountable for acting and involved in producing designs and then implementing the designs (commissioning and qualification post installation) according to SPL best practices.

This position may be realized as a lead automation engineer with demonstrated knowledge and experience in technology and is responsible for multiple systems across the entire site including existing site facilities, B100, B200 and/or FFIP. The incumbent must have a proven record of working independently within a matrixed project team.

The incumbent needs to demonstrate technical leadership qualities, abilities to lead a team of automation engineers with varying experience level. The incumbent needs to be able to demonstrate and communicate good technical understanding of the automation systems and defend technical design decisions. The incumbent also needs to provide coaching and guidance to junior team members and other stakeholders on the team to ensure automation deliverables and timelines are met.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as technical Ignition SCADA automation engineering subject matter expert responsible for iFMS, iBMS, Central Alarm System and any other ignition solution across the entire site including existing site facilities, B100, B200 and/or FFIP. Support all site CAPAs, CCRs and deviation investigations.
  • Provides direct technical input for design, commissioning and qualification of Ignition SCADA automation systems in a non-GMP and GMP environment.
  • Design and deploy Ignition SCADA systems and ensure compliance requirements developed during feasibility, basic design, detailed design phase and execution phase for C&M, Strategic, Tiers 1, 2, 3 projects.
  • Lead as automation representative in FAT, SAT and Critical Test Plan execution. Ability to configure and lead the following:

    o Create user interface screens in both Perspective and Vision

    o Configure alarming in Ignition.

    o Tag creation in the Designer (Connected Devices window, Tag Browser)

    o Connect to various data sources and/or equipment (via OPC, MQTT, etc.)

    o Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand project specifications and incorporate Ignition solutions into overall system architecture.

    o Write, test, and debug ignition code to ensure optimal system performance in GMP environment.

    o Implement and integrate Ignition systems into larger control systems.

    o Communicate technical concepts and solutions effectively to all stakeholders.

    o Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for Ignition system designs, implementations, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Direct input into configuration administration and maintenance activities of Ignition based systems (i.e. iFMS, iBMS, Central Alarm System, etc.)
  • Supports operations and performs with troubleshooting and issue resolution.
  • Perform appropriate review. Accountable for technical quality of design of automation systems. Perform appropriate reviews with vendors and stakeholders. Responsible for design that meets project budget and schedule for the applicable automation systems.
  • Construction and GMP Environment Field Work.
  • Oversees various automation project execution from technical standpoint for alignment in automation philosophy and strategy.

  • Technical aptitude/understanding across a broad number of subjects including vaccine processes and equipment, data integrity and cyber security

  • Ability to lead, engage and work with a spectrum of roles within the organization. This includes unionized trades, salaried managers, technical services support functions, quality, production and supporting functions.

Key Requirements:
  • Minimum B.Sc in Electrical, Automation Engineering or Computer Science
  • 5 - 7 years, direct of experience in applied automation design engineering and project experience are required. Additional experience in construction/installation, equipment start-up, qualification and/or validation is mandatory
  • Working knowledge of PLC's and automation in DCS platform
  • Experience with Ignition SCADA (biotech company or project)
  • Working knowledge of unit operations typically used in biotech and vaccine manufacturing such as bulk manufacturing, downstream operations, formulation, steaming (SIP) and cleaning (CIP)
  • Must understand the relationship between Good Manufacturing Practices, industry standards and their application to the manufacturing process.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with internal and external team members is essential
  • Strong analytical skills (engineering analysis)
  • Experience with one of the following platforms: Allen Bradley PLC, BMS System, OSISoft PI historian, Werum PAS|X, Instrumentation and control panel hardware as required by the job.
  • Experience with computer systems validation practices (GAMP).
  • Experience authoring and reviewing standard operating procedures, on-the-job-trainings, and other controlled documents.
