What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a motivated and well-rounded engineer seeking a Systems Engineering and integration lead role opportunity in the transportation of our nation's most secure assets. The primary responsibility will be as the Nuclear Explosive Safety Lead for Over-the-Road here at Sandia to support the SGT and MGT programs. This involves coordinating and interfacing with multiple areas of the NW complex to provide input on design, qualification, and sustainment of our customer's fleet, as well as provide technical basis development support for our customer's Documented Safety Analysis and Nuclear Explosive Safety Studies. The nature of the role is one of expansion and growth, which offers opportunities to work on other projects in a systems engineering capacity, as well as advance our R&D capabilities for implementing next-generation technology on our transporters to address emerging threats.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Maintain the trust-built relationship with our customer and work with them to solve complex problems.
  • Work with modelling and simulation engineers to produce results of accident scenarios and coordinate with tri-lab weapon response.
  • Provide technical support to our customer for upcoming NESS and DSA activities.
  • Provide insight into qualification strategy of the development transporter.
  • Generate technical basis documentation that our customer can use.
  • Provide engineering services to quick-turn projects on design and analysis.
  • Provide briefings to various levels of customer and Sandia management that help shape strategy and NW complex integration relevant to transportation operations.
  • Partnering with academia and industry to develop next generation technology for employment in our designs.

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$114,000 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant STEM field, plus five (5) years or more years of directly related experience. Or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Experience in the following:
  • Systems engineering, analysis, sustainment, or design.
  • Interpreting product drawings, specifications, and requirements.
  • Working in diverse technical teams.
  • Employ system analysis to evaluate complex problems and their effects both locally and globally.
  • Generate technical documentation and briefings.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Demonstrated ability to interact directly with a customer.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate and sustain trust-built relationships with teams and customers.
  • Experience operating in the research and development sphere.
  • Demonstrated success in leading efforts or teams.
  • Background in design, production, or sustainment of weapon systems or transportation systems.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent technical writing skills.
  • Ability to integrate with a team and leadership, interact effectively with all levels of internal and external partners to build effective working relationships to reach consensus.
  • Demonstrated success in cross-functional teams to facilitate and drive integrated, multidisciplinary solutions to complex operational problems.

About Our Team:

The Transportation Surety and Design Department supports the NNSA Office of Secure Transportation (OST) by conducting safety and security evaluations of OST operations, designing transportation systems and, when warranted, identifying and demonstrating technology applications to enhance OST safety and/or security posture. This team evaluates, develops, and improves a wide variety of technologies for enhancing secure asset transport and storage effectiveness for the DOE, DoD, and several other customers and applications.

Posting Duration:

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
