What Your Job Will Be Like:

Do you want to join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation¿s security? You could be the Senior Electronics Control Systems Engineer to contribute to realization of computer control and monitoring systems for advanced pulsed power, laser, diagnostic, and support systems used in high-energy-density science experiments. You will be part of multidisciplinary science and engineering teams doing cutting edge research and technology development to support NNSA's Stockpile Stewardship program. We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Controls Engineer/LabVIEW Programmer with a scientific or engineering background to join our team.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Collaborate directly with Pulsed Power scientists, engineers, technologists, and project management personnel to achieve successful realization of control systems.
  • Architect, develop, and deploy control software and hardware to meet system design requirements.
  • Implement LabVIEW test or application code in an object-oriented method.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve control software and hardware anomalies.
  • Manage project schedules, resources, and integration of pulsed power systems.
  • Prepare system design, performance, and user documentation.
  • Lead technical reviews and publish results in peer reviewed journals

    Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$114,000 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor¿s degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Demonstrated experience with analog and digital circuit design and analysis.
  • Hands-on experience testing and de-bugging circuitry, with clear mastery of tools such as oscilloscopes, logic/network/spectrum analyzers, function/pulse generators, etc.
  • Proven experience with design and analysis tools (e.g., Matlab and LabVIEW), analog simulation codes (e.g., LTSpice), and HDL simulation codes (e.g.,ModelSim).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

    Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
  • Experience developing and deploying software and hardware control system solutions for science and engineering applications.
  • Experience with the application, use, and programming of National Instruments LabVIEW software.
  • Experience in designing and implementing object-oriented code.
  • Experience with the application, programming, and fielding of control system hardware including oscilloscopes, digitizers, delay generators, FPGAs, logic/network/spectrum analyzers, embedded controllers (PLCs and/or cRIOs), function/pulse generators, etc.
  • Experience troubleshooting communication interfaces (for example: LAN, USB, SPI, etc).
  • Experience with communications protocols (for example: Modbus, RS232, OPC UA, TCP/IP, etc).
  • Experience programming PLCs using the IEC 61131 languages.
  • Experience with SCADA or DCS software.
  • Experience with wiring low-voltage DC control circuits.

About Our Team:

The Z, ZBL, and Pulsed Power Development Engineering Department (01691) provides engineering excellence for the development and stewardship of the Pulsed Power Sciences Center¿s flagship pulsed power facility Z Machine, Z-Beamlet Laser, and other pulsed power systems. The department¿s engineers, designers, project managers, and technologists provide engineered solutions in pulsed power and laser hardware, controls systems, controls software, advanced diagnostics, and facilities requirements to support the mission work pursued by the Pulsed Power Center. This team is part of the Radiation, Electrical and High Energy Density Science (REHEDS) Research Foundation at Sandia.

Posting Duration:
