What Your Job Will Be Like:
Envisioning your future as a Sandian
As a member of the Tonopah Test Range Management Team, the successful candidate will work with and lead/supervise a dynamic group of field test technical support and R&D personnel to ensure the successful completion of the assigned Laboratories flight test mission. This position is directly responsible to the Range Manager for activities that work to coordinate, plan, organize, and perform all technical support and sustainment efforts to enable the range to successfully execute flight test events. Coordination with Sandia internal stakeholders and SMEs, as well as external agencies, such as U.S. Air Force agencies, NNSA, and other national lab offices is required and expected. The Team Lead is responsible for following established range processes and procedures to ensure that all safety, security, and compliance requirements regarding the operation, facilities and infrastructure are met with quality. Incorporation of all corporate safety and work planning processes are inherent in this activity.
Primary Duties
The TTR team is seeking a Team Lead to plan, execute, supervise, and provide overall technical and mission infrastructure leadership to a diverse group of professional staff and technologists working in network and communications, electro-mechanical support, radar/optics/telemetry, and technical integration and development areas. The role requires a detailed understanding of project planning and oversight, data capture and information flow, networks and communications protocols, configuration management, and how to lead technical and R&D teams. A successful candidate must have a demonstrated ability to organize, plan, lead, and integrate multiple disciplines into a cohesive team to ensure critical mission systems and the supporting infrastructure are properly sustained to ensure the range can meet the customer's requirements. The position requires working with legacy testing systems as well as experimental programs and processes to develop procedures to ensure proper test execution and completion of all required documentation for pre-test preparations through post-test event reporting.
Note: This position is located at the Tonopah Test Range (TTR), with the normal work week running Tuesday through Thursday, 13-14 hours a day. Deviations to the normal schedule occur to facilitate mission requirements and may require personnel to remain away from home 4 days and 3 nights (or possibly longer) at this remote location. Work schedules may change/shift as required to meet organizational needs.
This is not a virtual/telecommute position.
On any given day, as a Team Lead, you will:
- Lead, mentor, and supervise a diverse group of technical engineering and R&D personnel to meet range sustainment and test preparation requirements.
- Document and track project risks and interface with stakeholders to develop mitigation and contingency plans.
- Evaluate competing characteristics between system elements and determine the most effective, integrated system solution.
- Document and track component and system-level performance requirements and develop sustainment and acceptance criteria for the range's mission systems and subsystems.
- Interface with internal and external customers and relevant SMEs to ensure the customer expectations are met.
- Develop logistical and support plans to efficiently use allocated resources.
- Maintain a fundamental understanding of the range data collection instruments and how they integrate to collect Time Space Position Information and event data while maintaining a range safety footprint.
- Work in a high-stress environment with competing priorities to meet tight deadlines.
- Develop and deliver a variety of presentations, proposals, and reports.
The Team Lead will also be expected to directly support the TTR Range Manager and will be ready to assume overall range management authority, if required.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Tonopah, NV. Some travel is required for this position (up to 25%).
Salary Range:
$127,400 - $216,600
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical/STEM discipline, plus five (5) years of directly relevant experience in technical and systems integration, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant experience and education.
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, and professional abilities, as well as meeting Sandia's values and behaviors, to lead cross-functional teams with competing priorities.
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including effective communication, delegation, teamwork, negotiation, conflict resolution, and coaching/mentoring skills.
- Working knowledge of the Tonopah Test Range (TTR) mission and technical functional areas, along with the challenges the range faces to meet customer expectations.
- Demonstrated expertise with designing, planning, and executing large scope projects, with the ability to prioritize assets and personnel assignments to complete assigned projects within work scope and adhering to financial and timeline constraints.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire:
- Master's degree in above-stated field.
- Ten (10) years of directly related experience in technical and systems integration.
- Proven experience in effectively coordinating and collaborating with various internal and external stakeholders to achieve project objectives.
- Previous functional area lead experience on-site at TTR.
- Detailed understanding of the TTR range infrastructure (i.e., radars, telescopes, cinetheodolites, telemetry, networks, and communications systems) and how they tie together to meet testing requirements.
- Application-level understanding of Sandia policies and procedures with regard to personnel actions, management, fiscal planning and oversight, safety and security, and compliance reporting.
- Ability to translate customer requirements into tasks for range technical teams.
- Project Management Experience and/or Certifications.
About Our Team:
Department 2235 operates the Tonopah Test Range for the National Nuclear Security Administration under Sandia's Prime contract. The Department consists of approximately 28 Sandia personnel and 35 contractors responsible for the technical operations associated with the nuclear weapons flight test mission and the maintenance of an extensive integrated test range facility with an instrumentation suite of precision tracking radars, telemetry ground stations, optical tracking mounts, meteorological data systems and numerous pieces of support, test and communications equipment.
