What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) is seeking an experienced electronics engineer/scientist with focus on equipment engineering to join our dynamic team in the Integration Lab (IL). The CINT IL cleanroom is one of the cornerstones of our user program, serving ~200 users/year. Our team members interact daily with users with various cleanroom experience from beginner to expert, in modes that range from instruction to collaboration. The individual filling this position will have leadership experience and working knowledge of all aspects of micro-fabrication principles and supporting equipment: including a solid understanding of machine control methodologies, electrical (DC-RF) and mechanical systems with the ability to solve unique, complex equipment and equipment related process issues.

On any given day…

  • You will enable researchers to achieve their microfabrication goals by helping them develop and refine their processes to overcome challenges.
  • You will work with the IL manager to help develop the strategic direction and long-term vision for the cleanroom facilities, tools, and overall budget.
  • Using your experience with mechanical and electrical systems, you will troubleshoot instrument and facility problems and instigate repairs and upgrades, as well as, design, construct, test, assess and implement equipment performance improvements.
  • You will interface with service and facilities contractors to ensure that work is satisfactorily completed on time and budget.
  • You will provide purchasing support for the IL by determining the appropriate parts, instruments, and services to acquire and shepherding purchase orders through the procurement system.
  • You will interact with and build relationships with key suppliers for the purchase of components and materials to maintain and improve lab equipment operation.
  • You will coordinate equipment related activities with lab technologists and vendors to maximize equipment uptime and availability.

Due to the nature of the work the selected applicant must be able to work onsite in Albuquerque, New Mexico Relocation will be provided for those that qualify.

Salary Range:

$114,000 - $227,500

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in materials science or mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering or related field, plus 5 or more years of experience working in a Class-1000 or better cleanroom in a hands-on equipment engineering role supporting common semiconductor processing equipment, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Able to acquire and maintain a DOE security clearance
  • Experience with the identification, troubleshooting, and successful resolution of complicated microfabrication process and equipment related issues.
  • Machine shop experience

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Ability to interpret and apply knowledge, and practical understanding of electrical, mechanical and machine control system theory and principles
  • Proven organizational skills, familiarity with common work processing and spreadsheet programs
  • The ability to perform and complete tasks independently or in a collaborative setting
  • Good interpersonal skills with an ability to work constructively with a highly diverse user population and staff
  • Experience with maintaining multiple project or task specific budget line items
  • Experience as team-lead or higher in a cleanroom environment
  • Solid understanding of vacuum systems, high power radio frequency power generation/transmission, plasma fundamentals, gas delivery system principles and components
  • Solid understanding of machine control systems and methodologies
  • Experience with common Atomic Layer Deposition, Physical Vapor Deposition, Chemical Vapor Deposition, ICP, CCP and DSP Reactive Ion Etch, Ion Beam Etch, Atomic Layer Etch equipment
  • Experience overseeing and maintaining building facilities systems and their impact on cleanroom operations.
  • Experience working at a User Facility

About Our Team:

The Nanosystems Synthesis and Analysis Department 1882 consists of CINT scientific research staff assigned to the Physical, Chemical, & Nanosciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories. CINT is a DOE/Office of Science National User Facility operated jointly by Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories with facilities at both Laboratories. The CINT Science Department is dedicated to establishing the scientific principles that govern the design, performance, and integration of nanoscale materials into microscale and macroscale systems and devices.
