Packaging Design Engineer (Experienced) Onsite

Bidder Eligibility:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

Level promotions (Member to Senior, Member to Principal, and Senior to Principal) may be permitted, but are not guaranteed, on this requisition.

Employees must remain in their current position for one year before applying for a new position, with the exception of student interns. Application of this requirement will not supersede collective bargaining agreements. What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Packaging Design Engineer to design, develop, and test packaging that meets regulatory, safety, and security requirements for the shipment, protection and handling of hazardous materials.

  • Packaging Design Engineers are also responsible for the following:
  • Designs, develops, tests, and obtains regulatory approvals for a variety of packaging used for the shipment and handling of hazardous materials, including hazardous, radioactive, and explosive materials. Prepares test plans and reports on package tests.
  • Prepares explosive classification requests and special permit applications to obtain Department of Transportation approval for new or specialized hazardous materials packaging.
  • Prepares interim hazard classification requests to obtain NNSA approval to ship developmental explosive materials.
  • Develops engineering drawings, work instructions, and training materials for hazardous materials packaging.
  • Works with customers to establish shipping requirements and schedules.
  • Provides packing instructions to prepare hazardous materials for shipment, including marking, labelling, and container selection.
  • Oversees packaging activities to ensure compliance with quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Signs legal shipping documentation on behalf of Sandia National Laboratories.
  • Provides guidance and direction to internal customers for the safe and compliant shipment of items.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant discipline plus five or more years of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Knowledge of engineering systems and applications of technology-aided engineering.
  • Knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and procedures and administrative practices.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow through to completion on multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and classified matter.
  • Excellent customer service and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, Department of Energy, and National Nuclear Security Administration complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to a particular engineering discipline.
  • Understanding of and exprience with the packaging and transportation requirements for explosives, radiological materials, and other hazardous materials covered by federal and state regulations is preferred.

About Our Team:

Department 10261, oversees the Shipping, Packaging, Corporate Storage and Mail functions of Sandia National Laboratories. Our Shipping team processes and packages outbound property and material which may include hazardous, non-hazardous, classified, and unclassified, for both domestic and international destinations. Our Corporate Storage team manages over 140,000 square feet of storage space, that includes explosives and RAD material and are responsible for the onsite transportation of hazardous materials. Our Mail team is responsible for the delivery of both internal and USPS Mail throughout out the Laboratory which also includes classified material.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
