What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a motivated, self-sufficient team member for the Brazing Laboratory for the role of R&D Laboratory Support Technologist. This laboratory supports critical metallurgical joining and vacuum furnace firing steps across a variety of Sandia mission areas through brazing and heat treatment of metal alloys. We address specific material needs for some of the most prominent national security programs and scientific R&D areas at Sandia, including Z-Machine and Switch tubes. The work in the Brazing Laboratory directly enables further material analyses and evaluation, allowing Sandia to answer both fundamental and applied science questions. As a Laboratory Support Technologist, you will make crucial contributions in support of Sandia's research and development and ensure the labs' ability to serve the nation is maintained and consistent.

Success in this role requires technical understanding of vacuum technology and fundamental materials science and ability to think critically in areas related to laboratory equipment troubleshooting and repair. Applicants should have a passion and ability to learn quickly and have genuine curiosity for problem solving. There is much we are continually learning heat treatment of metals, metal-to-metal brazing, active brazing with ceramic and composites, part assembly optimization, facilitation of vacuum technology improvements, etc. Join our team and help us be a part of the future of Sandia!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Operate vacuum and Hydrogen furnaces for heat treatment and brazing of metal alloys
  • Clean metal and ceramic parts through mechanical prep, grit blasting, chemical cleaning, air and vac/H2 clean firing
  • Perform part assembly before brazing, both large parts and under microscope
  • Troubleshoot and repair lab scale and industrial furnaces including parts and sub-equipment related to low and high voltage electrical, water, pneumatic, gas supplies, hydraulic systems, vacuum pumps (mechanical, turbo, cryogenic). (Essentially, this position requires you become an expert in vacuum systems)
  • Because of the continual interface with Brazing lab equipment, you will be asked to become both a Sandia Pressure Safety Advisor (PSA) and Sandia Electrical Safety Advisor (ESA) and to follow and enforce all Sandia safety policies
  • Maintain preventative maintenance and calibration program(s). Send out items for calibration, replace consumables for furnaces and safety checks

Due to the nature of the work the selected applicant must be able to work onsite in Albuquerque, New Mexico Relocation will be provided for those that qualify.

Salary Range:

$72,800 - $140,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • High school diploma plus 5 or more years' related experience in materials, mechanical, or chemical laboratory environments
  • Experience with laboratory vacuum systems and equipment including maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs and installation
  • Current active DOE Q-level security clearance

About Our Team:

The Microsystems Assembly & Brazing Department (1835) specializes in: (1) advanced packaging of electrical, MEMS-based, and optical components, and (2) addressing near-term and long-term soldering R&D needs, and (3) developing brazing methodologies for mission applications. The packaging team develops prototypes, fixtures, and proof-of concept devices to meet a wide variety of national security mission needs. We have advanced packaging and assembly capabilities that include precision wire bonding of integrated circuits, laser machining, and hermetic sealing, which are used to prototype complex integrated electronics assemblies. The soldering and brazing teams focus on understanding the process-to-performance connection of these joining methodologies, leading research to anticipate future needs while addressing engineering challenges affecting the mission today.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
