The Research Engineer: Vapor Compression Systems role entails the conceptualization, system model development, and qualification of new and existing technologies related to air conditioners, heatpumps, domestic potable water heating, space heating hydronic systems, and combination potable and space water heating systems. The position also entails collaboration, advisory, and joint development projects among Rheem Global operating units and/or with outside partners.

This position will serve our Advanced Technology & Simulation team, located in Lewisville, TX / Fort Smith, AR.


• Create computer-based component and system level simulations in the prediction of vapor compression cycle behavior, heat transfer, fluid flow, system performance of air conditioning, water heating, space heating, combinational water heating designs and applications.
• Create and develop software code and methodologies to facilitate simulation of products in current and future line up.
• Construct development paths and evaluate technical solutions to new concepts including alternatives of cost, timing, and risks
• Engage with product development groups to test, coordinate implementation of experiments.
• Evaluate test results in comparison to predicted outcomes, and prepare research summaries contextually relevant to the business
• Engage with different engineering teams in the application of new analysis tools and prediction methods.
• Engage and advise engineering teams on matters of expertise, coaching on analysis tools and methods, and engineering problem solving assistance.



• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Applied Physics, or Applied Mathematics

• 5 years of related experience in the heat transfer, mechanical design, modelling, analytics, optimization and validation methods.

• Working knowledge of analysis & system development tools (e.g. CoilDesigner, Vapcyc, Dymola, GT Suite, ANSYS/Fluent, ANSYS/Mechanical, MATLAB, LabView, SolidWorks, EnergyPlus, and the like)

• Demonstrated ability to code and develop mathematical models.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-determine, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks
  • Proven professional mentoring and communications skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively with all levels of internal team members, senior staff, external suppliers, and customers


• Master's or PhD degree in Engineering, Applied Physics, or Applied Mathematics

• 1-3+ years of related experience in the heat transfer, mechanical design, modelling, analytics, optimization and validation methods.

• Working knowledge of Vapor compression cycles and refrigerants.

• Advanced knowledge of system analysis and simulation tools (e.g. Dymola, Coil Designer, Vapcyc, Gt-suite, Ansys Fluent, Ansys Mechanical etc.)

• Proven experience in the evaluation, analysis, optimization, qualification, and implementation of heat transfer and fluid flow

• Professional Engineering License preferred
