In this role as VP of Information Technology - Asset Protection Division, you’ll have senior leadership responsibility of overseeing teams of software engineers and providing leadership, vision, and direction for the software engineering organization. You will be responsible for recruiting, developing, and retaining talent, and ensuring the software engineering staff has the skills and capabilities to meet evolving business needs. You will also oversee the implementation of software engineering initiatives and champion best practices while ensuring initiatives achieve business outcomes.

Leadership and Strategy Duties

  • Provide leadership, vision, and direction for the software engineering organization through managers and technical architect staff across multiple systems and workstreams.
  • Lead the software engineering organization to successful delivery of business outcomes.
  • Manage the software engineering budget, with ongoing focus on personnel, vendor, and capital expenditures.
  • Cultivate strong working relationships with business leaders to ensure software engineering teams meet expectations and contribute to achievement of business goals.
  • Collaborate with business leaders and IT leadership to develop short-term and long-term strategic plans.
  • Where applicable, work with product owner leadership to design, manage, and/or execute product roadmaps.

Talent Management Responsibilities

  • Guided by the divisional and functional strategies, develop effective people strategies to meet the organization’s current and future IT needs through developing, hiring, and/or sourcing talent. 
  • Manage resource allocation across teams to maximize business impact of resources and ensure each team has the skills and capabilities needed to achieve its objectives.
  • Manage software engineering talent, playing a key role in performance management and compensation processes, role and competency definition, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
  • Partner with Human Resources to create learning and development opportunities aligned to the organization’s skill and capability needs, and to provide rewarding career paths for software engineering staff.
  • Recruit, hire, and develop talent to address needs and skill gaps.
  • Facilitate collaboration and partnership across teams and stakeholders.
  • Build a culture that supports learning, collaboration, transparency, and inclusiveness.
  • Manage employee engagement and promote a compelling employee value proposition to retain software engineering staff.

Oversight for Software Engineering Functions

  • Ensure accountability for performance and results of the Application Development teams’ delivery of the technology components of the division’s strategic roadmaps.
  • Ensures collaboration with the business to ensure software development efforts and priorities are aligned.
  • Champion best practices and modern software development methods and tools.
  • Lead software engineering teams and other stakeholders to set goals for improving code quality, maintainability, security, and scalability and monitor progress against these goals.
  • Implement and manage software development status reporting, metrics, and benchmarks.
  • Accountable for overall production and performance of development in production and meeting SLAs.
  • Work with the Chief Information Security Officer to ensure software is effectively secured and that risks are mitigated.
  • Oversee management of relationships with corporate IT, consultants, vendors, and contractors and support negotiation of statements of work and business terms with suppliers.
  • Oversee DevOps processes and practices

Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes

  • Experience managing legacy technologies, platform consolidation and conversion to modern technologies.
  • Leadership experience working in complex, matrix IT and corporate environments.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to understand and drive business objectives.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience.
  • Strong talent management skills including talent development, coaching, mentoring, and team motivation.
  • Experience leading geographically distributed teams of employees and contract resources effectively.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong cross-functional partnerships at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate complex technical information to a broad variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills, including an ability to perform under pressure and manage multiple priorities with competing demands for resources.
  • Understanding of software development methodologies and best practices.
  • Understanding of relevant tools and platforms (e.g., cloud platforms, web technologies, client-server technologies, continuous integration, and deployment), with an eagerness to learn about new and unfamiliar technologies.
  • Adaptability and ability to manage rapid change in business needs, processes, or technologies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent applied experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering.
  • 8+ years of experience in managing talent.
  • Experience managing large development teams on complex projects.
  • Experience managing multiple teams of direct, indirect reports & shared services.
  • Knowledge and Experience in .NET, Angular, IBM i, RPG, cloud strategies.
  • Background in insurance, finance, or automotive/ F&I industries preferred.

Protective’s targeted salary range for this position is $163,000 to $206,065. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors, including but not limited to, job location, skills, and experience. The range listed is just one component of Protective’s total compensation package for employees. 

This position also offers additional incentive opportunities through an annual incentive based on individual and company performance.
