Position Details

This posting is for the following position:

Location: Capitol Hill Elementary- 8401 SW 17th Ave.

Schedule: Monday to Friday - 7 hours/day

Previous experience in School Nutrition and/or managing a high volume institutional kitchen is preferred.

What you will do
  • Responsible for day-to-day operations of Nutrition Services programs in Portland Public Schools in accordance with all Nutrition Services policies.
  • Your attendance is essential and you'll report for assigned days and hours of work.
  • Follow all food safety procedures to ensure safe food is received, prepared and served to all customers (students and staff).
  • Food preparation, cooking and service.
  • Provide excellent customer service according to policies.
  • Complete all accounting procedures needed for the school kitchen; managing customer accounts, meal count claiming and reporting, counting and banking money received, daily meal and sales reports, weekly reports and monthly reports.
  • Evaluate food service assistants with managers.
  • Supervises and trains assistants and student volunteers.
  • Work with the manager to establish work schedules.
  • Responsible for tracking and distribution of student incentives (if appropriate).
  • Order, receive and store all foods and supplies.
  • Ensures compliance with all Federal regulations in regard to service of meals and correctly reporting meal claims for the assigned school.
  • Maintains a financially successful food service operation including: controlling food and labor costs, and actively participates and supports department efforts to increase participation.
  • Maintain kitchen and cafeteria tables in a clean, safe and sanitary condition.
  • Assist in planning and implementing all meal programs needed.
  • Participate in meetings and in-service education programs as scheduled.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you bring
  • Knowledge of: District and departmental policies and procedures; principles of safe food handling and storage; acceptable product standards including quality and sanitation; procedures involved in record keeping and banking for school cafeteria; meal accountability system.
  • Can operate basic kitchen equipment including computers and phones.
  • Ability to: lift up to 50 lbs; stand and/or walk for up to eight hours on cement quarry tile floors; use full range of motion at a standard height work table, dishwasher and/or pot and pan sink. This includes bending and reaching; Push and/or pull up to 400 lbs on rolling racks or carts.
  • Demonstrate ability to exercise careful judgment, diplomacy, and tact with co-workers and other district staff and outside personnel.
  • Plan daily work effectively and complete this work on time with minimum supervision.
  • Basic math including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and use of fractions.
  • Effectively work in challenging situations. Is flexible and organized.
  • Quickly and accurately complete required record keeping.
  • Accurately complete PPS cafeteria records.

Training
  • Maintains a current Multnomah County Food Handler's Card or ServSafe Certification.

What we offer
  • Pay: $22.88/per hour
    • Employees are paid on a monthly basis, on the last business day of each month
    • The pay periods begin on the 16th and ends on the 15th of the following month
  • Schedule: August to June (170 days per year) when school is in session for students following the district calendar.
