PNC operates a growing nationwide franchise where tax returns are filed in all 50 states and many local jurisdictions as well. PNC is also a leader in tax technology innovation, including the use of bots, an automated K-1 image scanning process to integrate more than 1,000 equity investments, and highly automated apportionment mapping from source systems into a comprehensive enterprise data warehouse into the OneSource tax software.

As an Assistant Director of State and Local Tax within PNC's Corporate Tax organization, you will join our vibrant 40+ person tax practice based in Pittsburgh. Daily, you will be collaborating directly with our 15-person strong state and local tax group as you tackle leading edge technical topics and developments. In this capacity, you will have the opportunity to utilize your analytical reasoning and project management skills, as well as your state and local tax knowledge, to help manage the state tax risk of the PNC organization. This position involves combining both tax technical and technology skills to bring new and innovative approaches and solutions to our tax compliance process. Bringing fresh ideas for incorporating leading edge technologies to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the tax compliance process are a must in this role.

PNC strongly values continuing education and provides training opportunities to participate in tax conferences and workshops across the country. You will also work with our outside advisors from industry leading accounting and law firms to assist in developing and documenting our state tax positions. To promote collaboration and idea generation, this role requires a minimum of three days in the office in Pittsburgh, while the remaining days may be worked remotely.

Job Responsibilities:
• Accurately complete the state and local income tax compliance for assigned jurisdictions
• This includes the annual returns, estimated payments, extensions, and any notices received that are associated with these jurisdictions
• Coordinate with our tax credit partnership groups to determine the proper nonresident income tax withholding requirements for all states where we operate
• Actively participate in team discussions about federal and state tax positions, tax savings and planning opportunities, and process improvements
• Research state tax technical issues for state income/franchise and sales/use tax items
• Prepare state tax documentation necessary for tax accounting for the state tax provision, such as ETR and deferred tax assets/liabilities
• Analyze opportunities for future state tax credits
• Monitor state tax law changes and analyze the resulting impact to PNC
• Assist in the gathering of information and preparation of responses to state tax authorities for state audits impacting your assigned jurisdictions
• Attend continuing education opportunities - both internally and externally

Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree with 3+ years of related state tax experience; CPA, Master's in Taxation, JD, or LLM in Taxation preferred.
• Ability to interpret complex tax laws and regulations and communicate them to team members
• Strong decision making/problem solving skills
• Demonstrated project management skills and ability to run multiple processes at the same time
• Effective written and verbal communication

Job Description

  • Strong contributor to organizational tax reporting, tax planning and compliance function.
  • Oversees the completion of accurate tax returns to manage risk and minimize the tax obligations of the organization, utilizing general ledger and related financial documents as applicable. May also complete or assist with the completion of tax accounting entries and account reconciliations.
  • Shows initiative and demonstrates autonomy in managing technical tax areas. Coordinates, facilitates and resolves all taxing authority inquiries and audits.
  • Mentoring junior staff on appropriate regulations, filing procedures and internal communication needs. Keeps up-to-date with and advises others of company-related tax regulations at the federal, state and local levels.

Work Experience

Roles at this level typically require a university / college degree, with 3+ years of relevant / direct industry experience. Certifications are often desired. In lieu of a degree, a comparable combination of education, job specific certification(s), and experience (including military service) may be considered.
