About the Role
Designed to be open, extensible, and broadly accessible, the Opentrons robotics platform enables scientists to automate, reproduce, and share their work. With a rapidly growing install base of liquid handling robots globally and a robust pipeline of new products to be launched, effective and strategic management of products on the market is critical for commercial success. As the Sr. Director Product Management, you will lead a product management team that is accountable for the global strategic direction and performance of the Opentrons robotics product portfolio and roadmap.

Your role will encompass overseeing various aspects, including post-launch performance analysis, enabling the sales and client services organizations, staying up to date with competitive landscape and market trends, product forecasting and pricing, configuring workstations and product bundles, end-of-life planning, working with global marketing to develop key messaging and content, and effective communication with cross-functional teams to align efforts and achieve business goals. You will be the driving force behind maintaining and improving the long-term success and profitability of our robot and module products and their related software tools. The Sr. Director Product Management Robotics reports to General Manager Robotics.

What You Will Do

  • Recruit and lead a team of high performing product managers and designers with expertise across laboratory robotic hardware, software, consumables and routine laboratory workflows
  • Drive continuous improvement across the product management and design functions, building a culture of excellence
  • Drive continuous improvement across the product management and design functions, and build a culture of excellence by;
    • defining and driving process around product management
    • effectively assess team skills and recruit to fill key roles
    • train and level-up the skills of the entire product team
  • Contribute meaningfully to the product management and design team''s ability to execute consistently and with high quality.
  • Manage the Opentrons robotics product line to meet the needs of our customers for high quality, affordable, and easy-to-use laboratory robotics solutions backed by value added services and consumables
  • Accountable for the robotics product budget, product portfolio, end-to-end product lifecycle and product quality
  • Partner with commercial and marketing functions to deliver strategies in support of annual financial target achievement
  • Oversight for development and execution of effective customer feedback loops, translating that feedback into actionable go-to-market strategies, new product proposals and product requirements
  • Develop process for delivery of competitive and market analysis; partnering with Finance to continuously monitor and analyze the performance metrics of our products on market
  • Drive product service requirements and develop strategies to support field service, customer service and field application scientists through product training, product support process improvements and service related product development
  • Provide leadership in development and maintenance of a multi-year strategic product roadmap with overall accountability for portfolio prioritization backed by sound financial models to maximize growth and return on investment
  • Collaborate closely with R&D teams as a peer to provide oversight of NPI processes.

Who We Are Looking For

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience, preferably in a life science discipline

Experience:

  • 7+ years product management experience
  • 5+ years of experience managing leaders
  • Deep understanding of liquid handling products

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven track record of recruiting, training and coaching of product managers and designers
  • Experience grooming a product portfolio, building financial justifications for new product proposals, securing NPI funding, developing and launching successful products is a must
  • Deep experience working with R&D teams as a peer to provide oversight of NPI processes
  • Deep domain expertise in laboratory robotics or comparable life science equipment
  • An entrepreneurial sense of initiative and a bias for action
  • Ability to communicate a strong perspective and drive action in a highly dynamic startup environment
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for the Opentrons Mission and Guiding Principles

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

  • Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Frequent video conferencing required with internal team members and external customers and collaborators
  • Limited physical effort required
  • Ability to travel up to 25%, both domestically and internationally

Compensation Range: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $235,000 and $275,000 per year; base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience. We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including equity and full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. Following employment, growth beyond the hiring range is possible based on performance.
