Senior Expert, Materials Science Project Leader

Summary

Working as a part of an External Partner and Supply Management Team, with very strong connections to the Global Materials Science function, you will support our strategic external partners in the selection (e.g. through salt & polymorph screens), process development (e.g. crystallization, finishing step technologies) and physical characterization of appropriate solid forms of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). In addition, you will ensure the strengthening of scientific excellence at the interface between drug substance and drug product development through your good understanding of solid-state analytics, particle, and powder properties as a function of, for example, solubility, stability and biopharmaceutics.Your ability to build effective relationships with external partners (e.g. CDMOs) and internal stakeholders will be one key success criteria in ultimately ensuring the development and optimization of the physical properties of a drug substance for subsequent use in drug product development.

About the Role

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead all project activities being performed at strategic external partners that are under the accountability and/or responsibility of Global Materials Science, and/or partner functions.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in the field of particle design and characterization (e.g. solid state characterization, crystallization development, finishing technologies, powder properties) and the relationship with solubility and biopharmaceutics
  • Bridge the interface between drug substance and drug product during technical development, whilst ensuring full business alignment with other line functions and project sub teams.
  • Represent Global Materials Science internally (e.g. at scientific review boards) and as the key contact person to strategic external partners, to drive scientific excellence that encompasses risk-benefit approaches, and flexible contingency plans
  • Diligently maintain oversight of all activities being performed externally at assigned strategic external partner, drive relationship management aspects, ensure performance and quality monitoring to contribute to third-party management reviews

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO THE ROLE:

  • PhD or equivalent in relevant scientific field (e.g. solid-state analytics, particle technology, material science, physical chemistry)
  • Minimum 10 years of successful industry experience in the field of API solid state and particle engineering, crystallization development, finishing step (e.g. milling) process development, utilization of appropriate analytical technologies
  • Experience in external collaborations management, business acumen to manage project activities
  • Broad experience in technical development requirements in drug substance and drug product technical development.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, presentation, and technical writing skills.
  • Successfully demonstrated track record of creativity and problem solving in projects
  • Focused expertise in the application of milling technologies and related approaches in the preparation of drug substances and drug products.
