Staff-level mechanical engineering position in the Huntsville Hardware Engineering (HHWE) functional department of the Global Command and Control Systems (GC2S) business unit.
This position supports one or more projects performing mechanical design engineering to integrate Command and Control systems into tactical platforms for Department of Defense programs. These projects include air and missile defense command systems, anti-artillery systems, wheeled and armored vehicles, command operations centers, or security and warning systems, as well as associated activities.
This position supports a functional matrixed organization; employee's final program assignment may vary depending on staffing needs.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Leading multi-disciplinary teams developing technical solutions to complex engineering problems, ranging in scale from large subassemblies to entire deliverable products, in an Agile for Hardware development environment.
- Leading mechanical design of parts, assemblies, subsystems, and complete systems, including 3D CAD modeling, drafting/review/revision/release of engineering drawings, selection of components and materials.
- Coordination and management of multi-disciplinary aspects of product design, including mechanical. Structural, cabling, interconnects, power, thermal, EMI/RFI.
- Leading collaboration with other functional areas such as Production, Procurement, Systems Engineering, Quality, and Logistics to facilitate all aspects of product design, integration, and support.
- Serving as primary engineering contact for internal buyers and external vendors to exchange information and facilitate the design, fabrication, delivery, and inspection of particular components or systems.
- Directing or performing system-level, cross-disciplinary analysis of problems, failures, and root causes, and recommending detailed corrective actions.

- Directing and performing engineering analyses, such as weight/center of mass, structural, transportability, or thermal; as well as authoring, reviewing, and/or editing reports documenting them.
- Development and maintenance of bills of material in support of design, production, proposal, or other business activities, including engineering cost estimation.
- Supporting capture/proposal efforts through authoring of white papers, briefings, and proposal technical subsections; production of engineering cost and labor estimates; and other activities.
- Leading the creation, coordination, delivery, and defense of engineering briefings to support internal and external design reviews, including to company management and government customer representatives.
- Managing the preparation and coordination of contract deliverable reports and data packages.
- Mentoring and informally training mid- and senior-level engineers.
Minimum Qualifications:
Staff Mechanical Engineer:
-- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with 12 years' Experience, Masters Degree with 10 years' experience, or PhD with 8 years' experience
- Demonstrated ability to lead design of complex assemblies and subsystems to meet formal system requirements.
- Extensive Experience performing 3D CAD modeling using ANY standard 3D CAD package: SolidWorks, Solid Edge, CATIA, etc.
- Experience drafting and reviewing mechanical drawings to ASME standards.
- Experience leading teams solving complex technical problems in a collaborative environment.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and advance multiple assignments at once with minimal supervision while balancing competing demands for time and attention.
- Good verbal and written communications skills.
- Experience using any industry-standard Product Lifecycle Management system such as Team Center (preferred), SmarTeam, Windchill, Workgroup PDM, etc.
- Experience with industry-standard MRP systems such as SAP.
- Experience preparing or reviewing proposals for Department of Defense programs.
- Ability to obtain a DoD Secret-level clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with electronics/payload/C2 integration design for commercial or military systems.
- Extensive Experience performing 3D CAD modeling using NX.
- Experience leading the multi-disciplinary design of a major deliverable end item.
- Experience leading engineering support of production/manufacturing and test activities.
- Experience working in Agile for Hardware project development, particularly in a leadership role.
- Experience developing, monitoring, or improving formal, documented engineering processes and procedures.
- Technical expertise in one or more of the following areas:

-- Static/dynamic finite-element analysis
-- Military shelters/enclosures
-- Antenna co-site analysis
-- HVAC
-- Military mast systems
-- Weldment design/analysis/inspection
Primary Level Salary Range: $148,400.00 - $222,600.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
