Northrop Grumman is currently seeking an experienced Staff Mission Assurance Supplier Quality Engineer Level 5 to support the Mission & Quality Assurance functions at our Elkton, Maryland site.
The Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems and Controls (PS&C) facility in Elkton, Maryland began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. Today, the Elkton PS&C facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems in programs professionally managed for a wide variety of Government and commercial customers. The facility also serves as the hub for offsite engineering and test facilities in Ronkonkoma, NY, Palm Beach Gardens, FL and San Jose, CA.
Job Summary:
Support the mission/flight assurance (MA) plans for multiple programs by being the point of contact between Northrop Grumman and suppliers to ensure that parts are in accordance with contractual, design and quality requirements. The Supplier Quality Engineer will conduct supplier visits (e.g. source inspections, process witnessing, on-boarding, audits, etc.) to support program objectives and to help resolve any quality issues. The candidate should have knowledge in different areas such as manufacturing, special processes, inspection, electronics, or auditing with the ability to use this knowledge to assist suppliers through the entire product life cycle.
This position will travel (up to 50%) to supplier sites, on-site support at the Elkton facility as needed and the option to work from home when not on travel or supporting Elkton on-site activities. The preferred candidate will reside in the eastern United States.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Assure supplier's process and product quality, including contractual, regulatory, and technical compliance
Review and approval of supplier's documentation based on program requirements
Review and approval of supplier's AS9102 First Article Inspection (FAI)
Assist in the management of the Approved Supplier List (ASL)
Perform supplier visits (e.g. source inspections, process witnessing, on-boarding, audits, etc.) to support programs objectives
Conduct and support internal, customer and supplier audits
Participates in internal and customer meetings as the Supplier Quality (SQ) representative
Initiate Corrective Action Plans and work with suppliers, manufacturing, and engineering personnel to identify root causes and ensure robust corrective actions are implemented
Conduct Root Cause Analysis using concepts such as 8D, 5 Whys, and Fish-bone diagram, etc.
Proactive reduction and prevention of supplier caused material defects
Responsible for supplier quality risk management and return to "green" plans
Keeps management apprised of supplier performance, quality status, and risks
Analyze quality metrics to understand current trends with supplier quality and respond accordingly
Basic Qualifications:
Requires Bachelor's degree in Engineering or STEM discipline plus 14 years' experience in a related field or a Master's degree in Engineering plus 12 years of experience or a PhD plus 10 years of experience
Experience in engineering, manufacturing, operations, industrial engineering, quality engineering, or supply chain environments
Able to read engineering documentation (drawings, models, specs), interpret drawing dimensions, features, and parts lists, develop inspection plans, and identify critical features
Intermediate to advanced computer skills including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to understand and work with multiple enterprise-wide systems
Knowledgeable in Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) tools, such as Ishikawa, FMEA, DOE, KTA (Kepner Tregoe Analysis), 5Why, etc.
Must be able to travel up to 50% of the time to support supplier visits across the country
Familiarity with ISO 9001/AS9100 Quality Management Systems, GD&T, J-STD, machining processes, and special processes
Active DoD Secret Clearance which requires US Citizenship as a prerequisite
Preferred Qualifications:
Accredited certification in Quality, Lean, Six-sigma and/or Mission assurance field
IPC 600/610 and/or J-Standards trained and/or certified
Expertise or SME with key materials, technologies and/or processes such as machining, welding, CT scanning, special processes, electronics, additive manufacturing, inspection techniques, and chemical processing
Expertise or SME in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) techniques
Must be able to effectively mentor less experienced personnel and provide guidance to other departments and suppliers as it relates to quality
Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to accommodate various styles in communications as well as strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
Must be independent and able to work with little supervision
Salary Range: $148,400.00 - $222,600.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
