What You'll Get To Do
The Consulting System Safety Engineer is to be an expert with extensive experience in system safety requirements and mentoring. There are two prime objectives for this Consulting System Safety Engineer. The first objective is focusing on the down and in of the System Safety team, creating a strong culture through mentorship, training, and ensuring the proper level of technical rigor is placed on the work products the System Safety produces.
The second objective entails working collaboratively with the Chief of Safety to recommend design features that meet safety criteria in system design to control or eliminate hazards. Supporting the Chief of Safety as needed including active participation in the design of products/systems, associated support equipment and facilities. As required working as the Chief of Safety's delegate of authority. The role includes the creation of functional specifications and establishes safety requirements for assigned systems. The tasks includes developing safety documents, as required, to support customer and test/operational range requirements and performing audits of operational areas and reporting on the effectiveness of system safety program. The role includes evaluating the interrelationship of system safety requirements and other aspects of concept design and development requirements to ensure the most cost-effective program. The extended areas of responsibility include NEPA, Environmental regulations and ESOH.
The candidate will have extensive expertise in the application of MIL-STD-882E in design development of complex military systems. The candidate will have extensive experience in generation of required artifacts such as System Safety Program Plans, System Safety Analysis Reports and Functional Hazards Analysis Reports. The candidate will have extensive experience in the application of safety principles and methods to mature the GBSD systems design for safety and support flight test and flight worthiness of complex systems. The candidate must have considerable experience in military range safety and testing of complex military systems.

This positions standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off. This role may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.
You'll Bring These Qualifications:
• Bachelor's of Science degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline and a minimum of 16 years of experience in systems and product development; OR Master's of Science degree in a STEM discipline and a minimum of 14 years of experience in systems and product development; OR PhD in PhD in a STEM discipline with 12 years of experience in systems and product development.
• At least 12 years of experience in direct system safety MIL-STD-882E work on complex military systems
• At least 5 years of leading teams of system safety engineers on military systems
• At least 2 years of experience in ESOH considerations in complex facilities and installed equipment
• At least 1 year of experience in environmental protection regulation efforts with state and/or federal agencies
• At least 1 year of experience in military range and munitions safety
• At least 1 year experience in software safety
• Must be a US Citizen with an active U.S. Government DoD Top Secret security clearance at time of application with an investigation completed within the last 6 years
• Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) approval within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business need
These Qualifications Would be Nice to Have:
* • Experience using DO-178 for design development
• Experience with AFSPCMAN 91-170 for range safety
• Active in safety communities/organizations of practice
• Weapon System experience (Minuteman III or similar military or industry experience)
• Model Based Systems Engineering experience
• Experience in application of STPA for safety
Salary Range: $178,600.00 - $282,100.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
