Northrop Grumman's Space Systems Sector is seeking a Satellite Systems Engineer - Flight Operations/Flight Controller to support the operation and maintenance of NASA's Chandra X-Ray Observatory program. The Chandra X-Ray Observatory is the third of NASA's Great Observatories, continuously providing ground-breaking science to a world-wide scientific user community. The Chandra Operations Control Center (OCC) located in Burlington, MA is a stand-alone NASA certified operations facility that brings together ground, flight and science operations teams to support the Chandra mission. This role will be located in Burlington, MA.
This position is contingent upon acquiring and maintaining customer and/or business funding.
As Flight Controller, you will be a member of a two-person team on each scheduled shift, responsible for on-console satellite operations, including state-of-health assessments, issuing commands to the spacecraft, monitoring telemetry, performing routine spacecraft maintenance tasks and completing contingency response actions. Off-console tasks can include assisting other mission support teams with spacecraft telemetry analysis, software tool development and testing, ground system troubleshooting and testing, generation and maintenance of procedures, and scheduling of real-time communications passes. Note: flight controllers are required to work shifts which will include evenings and holidays so that the team can provide 19h/7d/365d operation coverage for the mission.

Flight Controllers interface directly with spacecraft subsystem engineers, analysts and mission planners conducting day-to-day operations with the Chandra spacecraft. The flight operations team collaborates closely with scientists from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and NASA.
The selected candidate should be a motivated self-starter who is able to work both collaboratively and independently on both short and long term off-console projects. The Flight Operations Team values the ability to develop and communicate outside-the-box solutions and we share our customer's passion for advancing the understanding of the universe.
For a successful team member, this role may expand to include:
-NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) ground station scheduling
-Flight dynamics support and analysis
-Innovative definition/development of special purpose procedures and tools
-Development and testing of ground software tools to support Chandra operations
Basic Qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and 2+ years of engineering experience OR
-Master's Degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
-Ability to support assigned operational shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays
-Thorough attention to detail when executing technical procedures
-Capable of receiving and relaying information to internal and external customers
-U.S. Citizenship required
Preferred Qualifications:
-Master's Degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
-Experience in a technical spacecraft operations role, including maintenance, or equivalent Military Space Ops experience
-Experience using, and fluidly switching between, online communications tools, including Slack, Google Chat/Meet, Microsoft Teams, or other similar tools
-Knowledge of Unix/Linux-based operating systems and scripting experience highly desirable
-Able to collaborate in a team environment while negotiating and integrating different viewpoints

Primary Level Salary Range: $89,400.00 - $134,200.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
