We are looking for you to join our team as a Principal Superconducting PCM Physicist or Sr. Principal Superconducting PCM Physicist

This position requires onsite fulltime work onsite at our Advanced Technology Lab (ATL) facility in Linthicum, Maryland or our Annapolis Junction, MD location.

We are seeking a motivated Physicist to help us test the next generation of high-performance computing solutions! Our technology is built around superconducting electronics and energy efficient computation. You will work with a team of scientists and engineers to design, fabricate, and test superconducting electronics focused on process control monitoring and reporting. We are a hard-working team that strives to foster a culture of belonging, mentorship, and personal growth. We are passionate about creating innovative solutions to exciting multi-disciplinary challenges!

As a member of our team:
  • You will be interfaceing between the test teams and software teams to understand software requirements and to prototype software, such as baseline tools, updating the existing framework, designing software architecture, and develop instrument drivers.
  • You will be assisting the launching of tools developed by the software team, helping troubleshoot test lab bugs, and any other software related issues that arise during test operations.
  • You will be responsible for maintaining codebase through building unit tests and peer reviewing pull requests.
  • You will be prototyping and improving test automation procedures, for example developing test modules that are able to collect metrics for a new design of experiment in an automated fashion.
  • You will be involved in the collaboration efforts to stand up novel test stand capabilities while understanding the full scope of the effort including hardware and software.
What you need to be successful in the role:
  • Interest in interfacing with the test teams to optimize test automation.
  • Motivation to learn new technologies and technical skills.
  • Penchant for applying theoretical physics to empirical data.
  • Ability to collaborate in a small group setting (4-7 people) as well as work independently.
This position can be filled as either a Principal Superconducting PCM Physicist or a Sr. Principal Superconducting PCM Physicist. Qualifications for both are listed below:

Basic Qualifications for Principal Superconducting PCM Physicist:
  • PhD in experimental physics, electrical engineering, or a related field ( or will complete by December 2024) ; OR Master's Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; OR a Bachelor's Degree with 5 plus years of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience designing and executing experiments in physics or electronic device research.
  • Experience with instrument control over TCP IP or GPIB.
  • Experience with RF test equipment such as: Oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, arbitrary waveform generators, digital multimeters, source meters. .
  • Experience working in a lab environment and considerable coding experience.
  • The ability to demonstrate strong communication skills and to work on a diverse multi-disciplinary team.
  • A strong ability to learn new topics quickly and independently solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance with polygraph (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite).
Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Superconducting PCM Physicist:
  • PhD in experimental physics, electrical engineering, or a related field and 4 plus years' of relevant professional experience; Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; Bachelor's Degree and 9 plus years' of relevant professional experience.
  • Experience designing and executing experiments in physics or electronic device research.
  • Experience with instrument control over TCP IP or GPIB.
  • Experience with RF test equipment such as: Oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, arbitrary waveform generators, digital multimeters, source meters.
  • Experience working in a lab environment and considerable coding experience.
  • The ability to demonstrate strong communication skills and to work on a diverse multi-disciplinary team.
  • A strong ability to learn new topics quickly and independently solve problems in a fast-paced environment.
  • Clearance: Ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI clearance with polygraph (U.S. citizenship is a pre-requisite).
Preferred Qualifications for both Principal or Sr. Principal Superconducting PCM Physicist:
  • A PhD in Experimental Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Deep expertise of cryogenic experimental methods.
  • Experience with superconducting electronics or digital circuits.
  • Experience with cryogenic test systems.
  • Ability to automate experimental tasks using high level and built-in software languages.
  • Experience with integrating theory, design, and testing methodology to improve the product development cycle within an agile framework.
  • An active TS/SCI clearance with a Polygraph.
Salary Range: $123,900 - $185,900
Salary Range 2: $153,600 - $230,400

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
