We are looking for you to join our team as a Principal Computational Physicist.
We are seeking a Computational Physicist with a robust scientific and computational background who has an interest in developing and implementing simulation and optimization techniques for superconducting qubits and superconducting electronics. This position will involve understanding and improving existing simulation and optimization tools as well as developing new ones. The ideal candidate has experience working on simulations used to design new experiments and understand test results.
This position requires full-time on-site work at our Advanced Technology Laboratory (ATL) in Linthicum, MD location or our Annapolis Junction, MD location.
Your responsibilities:
Develop, implement, and maintain numerical simulation models and optimization techniques for the design of superconducting devices.
Use simulation tools to analyze and understand test results on superconducting devices.
Ensure simulation and optimization tools scale and run efficiently on high-performance computing systems.
Support modeling & simulation teams running and troubleshooting third-party simulation tools (e.g., Ansys, COMSOL, Cadence) on HPC system (up to 20% of time).
What you need to be successful in the role:
Motivation to conduct research in qubits and superconducting electronics.
Tenacity when solving problems and drive to find optimal solutions.
Ability to learn new techniques, as needed by the program requirements.
Ability to present technical results to a wide range of audiences.
Ability to collaborate in small groups (4-7 people) and to work independently.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) with 5 years of relevant experience; Master's degree in STEM related field with 3 years of relevant technical experience OR Masters' degree in STEM related field and currently enrolled in a PhD program with a completion date prior to start with 1 year of relevant technical experience OR PhD in STEM related field with 1 year of relevant technical experience.
Experience developing physics-based simulation and optimization techniques.
Experience developing mathematical models to understand experimental results.
Experience in collaborative scientific software development.
Proficiency writing code in Python and C++.
Current active Top Secret (TS/SCI) clearance with polygraph per business requirements. U.S. Citizenship is a prerequisite.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in STEM related field with 1 year of relevant technical experience OR Master's degree in STEM related field with three years of relevant technical experience.
Experience with developing parallel code (MPI, OpenMP) and with designing scientific code.
Experience with running and benchmarking scientific software on high-performing computing systems.
* Experience with computational methods (finite differences, finite volumes, finite elements) for solving ordinary and partial differential equations.
Salary Range: $127,400.00 - $191,200.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
