We are looking for a Design Engineering Manager 1 to lead our Deployable Structures and Mechanisms team in Goleta, CA.

As a key strategic member of the Northrop Grumman Deployables leadership team, the Design Engineering Manager 1 is responsible for leading the Deployable Structures and Mechanisms team through conceptualizing, designing, building, and testing space flight systems such as coilable booms, telescoping booms, and specialty mechanisms. This manager serves as a central design authority to ensure all programs in the Deployable Structures and Mechanisms value stream are following the most up-to-date processes and best practices and is a major contributing member to all process and design improvements affecting the value stream. The manager also participates in Failure Review Boards (FRBs) and assists in identifying Root Cause and Corrective Actions (RCCA) to prevent failures from reoccurring and helps disseminate all lessons learned on programs to the entire team. This manager occasionally works with Business Development in reviewing bids and proposals for new programs in the Deployable Structures and Mechanisms value stream and is responsible for estimating engineering efforts for new business costing activities. The manager may also serve as a Technical Director (TD) for specific programs within the value stream.

Through collaboration with Engineering product team leads and other functional managers, the Design Engineering Manager 1 is responsible for resource management and prioritization to provide prompt response and situational resolutions to meet all value stream goals and objectives. The manager also supports team member growth and advancement activities such as one-on-one discussions, mentoring, and performance reviews, as well as overall team management activities such as interviewing and hiring new team members. This manager is also responsible for maintaining high performance metrics for engineering on time delivery (OTD) and first pass yield (FPY) as they relate to the release of engineering documents for the value stream.
Role and Responsibilities:

Guide the technological development of state-of-the-art deployable structures and mechanisms for space applications

Provide technical oversight and serve as a subject matter expert on deployable structures and mechanisms engineering projects

Meet engineering safety, quality, delivery and cost expectations of internal and external customers for the deployable structures and mechanisms value stream

Ensure plans are developed and executed to meet internal and external customer requirements

Support site goals of high on time delivery and first pass yield by assigning appropriate resources to priority projects and monitoring progress

Participate in failure review boards and identify root causes and corrective actions to fix issues and prevent them from reoccurring

Share lessons learned with team members and ensure program teams are informed of current best practices

Participate in next level leadership reviews and execute improvement actions identified

Develop and review engineering estimates for new program proposals

Support team member growth and development, and track team member proficiency in skills critical to engineering execution

Allocate personnel resources to programs and track personnel assignments for workload forecasting

Participate in interviewing applicants and making hiring decisions

Basic Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in engineering with 5+ years' design engineering experience, or similar; OR 3+ years relevant experience with a Master's degree

3+ years of experience leading or managing teams, or combination of technical design lead with 2 or more assigned staff providing technical guidance and/or leadership

Working knowledge of mechanical design, structures, mechanisms, release and drive actuators, and materials as they relate to space flight applications

Strong knowledge in engineering systems and processes such as CAD, FEA, and GD&T

Excellent communication skills - speaking, presenting, writing, and listening

Ability to coordinate with senior leadership on program and site objectives

Combination of industry knowledge, leadership skills, management expertise, and in-depth knowledge of the design engineering process

US citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in engineering

2+ years of functional management experience

Detailed knowledge of mechanical design, structures, mechanisms, release and drive actuators, and materials as they relate to space flight applications

Detailed knowledge of deployable structures and specialty mechanisms for space flight applications - specifically coilable booms, telescoping booms, rollable booms, hinges, and on-orbit spacecraft capture mechanisms

Proven ability to perform under pressure and maintain a positive attitude

Experience capturing customer requirements from specifications and statements of work and tracking compliance with those requirements

Experience leading failure review boards and root cause and corrective action activities

Experience forecasting engineering scope and effort for bids and proposals

Primary Level Salary Range: $107,300.00 - $160,900.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.The application period for the job is estimated to be 20 days from the job posting date.
