As the VP, Annuity Distribution – Brokerage, you’ll be responsible for developing and executing the business strategies and objectives; establishing annual and long-term operating policies, contributing to new product development, and coordinating with Marketing, Strategic Accounts, and Business Development.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:  

  • Strategic direction: Leads sales strategy ensuring alignment and consistent processes across all sales units and sales teams.  Maintains key relationships with focus firms.  Establishes long-term direction for the broker dealer & dually registered annuity channel for both fee based and commission based sales, taking into consideration resources, market drivers and organizational values. Advocates for sales strategies that protect Nationwide Financial’s long-term interests.

  • Driving execution: Key focus is to achieve sales plan goals through effective direction and execution of sales activities via intermediaries in the broker dealer & hybrid channel.  Fully responsible for wholesale sales activities.  Leads and directs sales managers to reach goals and ensures all initiatives, processes and goals receive the proper direction and focus to ensure objectives are met.  Develops short- and long-range business plans and manages to objectives.  Partners with other channels to ensure team-based sales is executed and influences sales of other products, including Retirement Plans, Life Insurance and Mutual Funds, as well as annuities in the RIA and Alternative Channels.  Partners with NI to drive deeper relationships with key partners.  Ensures profitable growth.  Maintains budget control and expense management.  Responsible for training all wholesalers around commission-based sales.

  • Cultivates networks: Represents the annuities sales organization with press, industry organizations, government agencies and other outside parties, as well as with major clients.  Develops and maintains relationships with related internal areas which play a critical role in supporting sales and developing products.  Contributes to focus firm strategy.  Proactively identifies business opportunities for the customer.  Maintains strategic relationships with stakeholders inside and outside the organization. 

  • Leadership: Inspires a shared vision while supporting a culture of engagement and sales coaching. Ensures personal and professional development for team members. Navigates changes in markets, industry, and products through effective communication with the team.  Role models traits and outlooks that characterize successful sales professionals.  Recruits and develops talent at all levels.  Oversees associate management including: performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organizational planning, hiring and placement and disciplinary actions.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.  

Reporting Relationships:  Reports to SVP, Annuity Distribution.  Leads a team of 10 direct reports and approximately 100 indirect reports.   

Typical Skills and Experiences:  

Education: Undergraduate degree in degree in business, sales, finance, management or related field.  Graduate degree preferred.

License/Certification/Designation:  Professional certifications/designations preferred.  FINRA series 6/7, 26/24 and 63 required.

Experience:  Ten or more years of experience in managing all aspects of sales operations for a sales channel, in the insurance/financial services industry.  Experience managing sales people, including regional sales managers and wholesalers.  Experience developing short- and long-range operating plans.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:  Strong collaboration skills with ability to facilitate/manage cross functional teams; strong strategic orientation with the ability to learn new, unfamiliar business strategies and plans; demonstrated ability to translate broad strategic decisions into firm, detailed financial implications and recommendations; strong negotiating and influencing skills to bring both economic and strategic value; excellent quantitative and qualitative assessment skills, critical thinking skills, and ability to influence business strategy and policy; strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.  Ability to maintain a culture of engagement, accountability, and sales coaching.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence. 

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Working Conditions: Must be able to travel approximately 50% of the time to domestic locations.
