Client Portfolio Manager

Job Description Summary

The Nationwide Insurance investment organizations manage insurance company general account assets as well as non-general account assets. The Client Advisory Services – Business Partnership team is responsible for client engagement, client communications, client reporting, business development, portfolio analysis, cash flow monitoring, and cross-enterprise special projects. The team serves as the bridge between our investment process and portfolio managers and clients both internal and external to Nationwide. The team also works closely with other areas of the company, including Compliance, Legal, Treasury, Finance, and Controllership.

This role focuses on client management and reporting of investment portfolios to
support management of portfolios and communication of results to clients. Candidates should have a knowledge of investments and finance, an understanding of fixed income asset classes and the ability to easily analyze large sets of data.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:


Reporting/Communication

  • Manages day-to-day relationship and communication with clients/business partners

  • Interacts with Enterprise Portfolio Management and Asset Class Managers to understand tactical and strategic objectives

  • Work with clients and the investment team to identify solutions/opportunities to help clients achieve objectives/goals

  • Coordinates and completes monthly and quarterly client reporting

  • Collects data and completes surveys and questionnaire requests

  • Creates and delivers high quality presentations to key business partners

  • Facilitates and edits asset class presentations for client audience

  • Supports other projects and activities as needed to meet department objectives

Analysis

  • Defines and builds processes to improve efficiency of investment analysis and reporting

  • Conducts analysis of positional and transactional portfolio data

  • Reviews performance results and financial objectives

  • Assists in the management of special programs/initiatives

Portfolio Support

  • Understands client-based objectives and constraints by partnering with associates across Investments

  • Monitors portfolio positioning relative to client-based guidelines

  • Assists portfolio managers in understanding impact of portfolio changes relative to guidelines

  • Drafts portfolio commentary for client reporting

  • Leads investment guideline revisions as needed and communicates changes to all affected parties

  • Monitors daily cash flow forecasts to understand changes and potential issues; researches questions and issues

  • Effectively partners with other units within Investments and across the Company in support of achieving Investments and Company objectives

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Senior Investment Professional

Typical Skills & Experiences: 

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in finance, accounting or quantitative field.  Master’s Degree and/or CFA designation a plus. 

Experience: 10 or more years of experience in investments, accounting or finance and/or previous insurance company experience. Client relationship management experience in a financial services setting is preferred.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Most critical attributes are: analytical capabilities, problem solving, critical thinking and effective communication.  Nationwide Investments emphasizes a team oriented approach, which will require the associate to demonstrate these attributes on both individual and group levels.  Other attributes include:

  • Understanding of fixed income concepts and relationships

  • Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Excel skills; ability to manipulate and analyze large sets of data

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • High degree of logic and reasoning skills

  • Works autonomously with limited direction from manager

  • Driven, self-motivated, and intellectually inquisitive

  • Applies financial knowledge and methods to address investment questions and facilitate improved decision making 


Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment with little to no travel; remote eligible
