Derivatives Risk Associate
Background on the Position:
The role will reside within MSWM Complex Products & Strategy Risk area. New Hire will join the Complex Products & Strategy Risk team as a technical colleague for strategic coding projects, promoting process automation, the build-out of analytical libraries used for the generation of derivatives and market risk metrics, and delivering online product & risk training. This role will support the articulation and execution of strategic risk initiatives, including facilitation of discussions with internal stakeholders and senior executives to ensure vision alignment with other areas such as Product, Finance, Legal, Risk and Compliance, Technology, Operations and Marketing.
Primary Responsibilities:
The role will require strong partnership with stakeholder business units across the firm including Investment Solutions, Investment Platforms, Legal & Compliance, Technology, and other Risk teams.
The candidate's primary responsibilities will include:
- Integrate risk metrics into a risk appetite framework to enable the WM business to assess the economics of engaging in client transactions
- Leverage existing risk tools/models to develop forward-looking analytics that enable WM Risk to proactively manage client risk
- Support, test, and communicate strategic risk initiatives, including analyzing high-level performance data, and identifying optimization opportunities
- Drive execution of complex strategic risk data projects with independence, ownership, and autonomy
- Able to quickly and effectively digest and convey complex processes and subject matter across interdisciplinary audiences of various levels
- Areas of coverage will include VaR models, time series (TS) models (anomaly detection algorithms, gap-filling models), and various kinds of output performance monitoring analytics
Qualifications:
To fulfill these responsibilities the candidate should understand the Wealth Management business and operations. Skill at coordinating interdepartmentally with multidisciplinary stakeholders for consensus and implementation will be critical for the role. Additionally, candidates should be well-versed in complex financial products, quantitatively inclined, adept with large volumes of data, intellectually curious, nimble, creative, and ambitious.
The successful candidate will also be expected to work independently as well as part of a team, taking initiative and responsibility to drive tasks forward. The ideal candidate should be able to manage through influence, facilitating and gaining consensus. The ability to reach risk-based conclusions quickly and consistently will be critical to success in this role.
Experience / Skills Desired:
Education
- A degree in a quantitative field such as Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Mathematical Finance, Physics or Engineering (Preferred Advanced degree (Masters) in Quantitative discipline such as Statistics, Mathematics, Econometrics, etc.)
Experience
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in finance, preferably within a risk management role (CFA or FRM, or progress towards one of them, is an advantage)
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills; data analysis experience and robust financial modeling skills a plus
- Experience in advancing ideas and challenging complex mathematical models, where appropriate.
Communication
- Strong communication skills, including written and verbal communications, experience in developing presentations as well as maintain a network of contacts and coordinate with many stakeholders
- Able to drive consensus across business units of multidisciplinary teams with competing priorities
Domain Knowledge
- Understanding of financial products and markets, including derivatives, credit instruments, and structured product
- Strong knowledge of time series-related statistical/analytical techniques such as cohort regression modelling, expectation-maximation algorithms, principal components analysis, etc.
- Knowledge of market risk modelling methodologies (value-at-risk, expected shortfall, Greek-based VaR) Knowledge of market risk modelling methodologies (value-at-risk, expected shortfall, Greek-based VaR).
Core Technical Skills
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL.
- Experience with data visualization and analytics tools (e.g., Power BI, Excel, Tableau).
- Ability to solve problems while working under pressure, as well as undertake, execute and deliver multiple simultaneous projects under tight deadline on time
- A successful candidate must be able to multi-task and effectively prioritize in a pressured environment with evolving priorities, work in a team environment with and tight deadlines, and promptly communicate risks to on-time delivery
