R&D Prototyping Technician

Meta Reality Labs - Research (RL-R) is dedicated to the research and development required to bring virtual and augmented reality to billions of people around the world. At the Codec Avatar lab, we aspire to a vision of social VR and AR, where people are able to interact with each other across distances in a way that is indistinguishable from in-person interactions.RL-R is looking for a self-motivated Prototyping Technician to accelerate the progression to authentic social presence. As a Prototyping Technician, you will work closely with Engineer and Researcher teams to develop functional concept prototypes and complex electro-optical/mechanical systems. You must demonstrate an understanding of technical skills and knowledge in a variety of prototyping processes at a consistent high-level of quality and speed. This position requires strong conceptual development and the proficient use of various manufacturing processes and their correct implementation within the prototype path. You must be able to work independently, have a high attention to detail, be customer oriented and possess strong problem-solving skills. A good working knowledge and ability to take working files or conceptual ideas and develop them through to completion. You are well organized and have strong communication skills.

R&D Prototyping Technician Responsibilities:
  • Use your fabrication and assembly experience to support delivering first of a kind headsets, motion capture and/or other prototype systems, including mechanical assembly, PCB inspection and rework, cable harness fabrication, soldering of small components, electrical bring-up, system test, field test, site deployment, and documentation
  • Create prototypes of concepts and products for evaluation, presentation and focus group studies
  • Review requirements with the engineers and researchers prior to implementation, proactively identify issues, and suggest solutions
  • Collaborate with the Researchers and Engineers to ensure models and prototypes meet their requirements
  • Participate in all aspects of the design, prototyping, integration, and productization process, including quality and safety
  • Documentation and control responsibility for all processes and procedures related to the position
  • Creation and maintenance of assembly and testing procedures related to prototype systems
  • Vendor management of third-party contract manufacturing and assembly service providers
  • Follow control procedures to ensure laboratory standards and safety are maintained
  • Collate and present processing and measurement results
  • Operate advanced process and metrology equipment
Minimum Qualifications:
  • CAD experience (SolidWorks/PDM, NX/Teamcenter, Fusion 360, Rhino)
  • Experience in working with cross-functional teams including Engineering, Product Design, Research, etc.
  • Experience understanding technical and engineering designs
  • Hands-on experience and knowledge of the full spectrum of the prototype development process, such as: 3D printing, laser cutting/marking, CNC machining, functional prototypes, electrical integration, finishes at a production-level appearance
  • Knowledge of electrical test equipment, including spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, DMM/DVM, etc.
  • Experience devising and constructing tools, dies, molds, jigs, and fixtures, or modifying existing tools and equipment to achieve desired outcome
  • Knowledge of electronics theory, circuit design, troubleshooting, and repair
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of experience as electro/mechanical technician
  • Experience with prototyping sensing systems which include cameras, depth sensors, ultrasound, radar, IMUs, microphones, LED lighting, etc.
  • C++/Python programming experience
  • Familiarity with low and high voltage commercial electrical systems
  • Strong analytical, time management and organizational skills
