Onsite Controls Engineer Lead

Meta is seeking a Controls Engineer experienced in the design and construction of Critical Facilities to become part of our onsite data center design team. Our data centers are the foundation upon which our software operates. Building and operating reliable and efficient data centers is essential to support the growth of Meta. The data center design team collaborates with all key stakeholders to ensure engineering and design of our data centers incorporate considerations from micro-levels (servers and IT equipment design requirements) to macro-levels (mechanical cooling and power distribution options) to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability of our compute infrastructure. As an integral part of the onsite Design team, you will support design and onsite construction administration as Design Owner Representative, Controls Engineer and subject matter expert, collaborating with multiple internal partner teams such as Engineering, Construction Management, Quality, Safety, and Facility Engineering, and external partners such as engineers of record, general contractors, and regulatory agencies to deliver data center capacity safely, on time, within budget, and high quality. This position is full-time, on project site, in support requiring engagement with stakeholders and providing directional guidance aligned with the pace of dynamic fast-tracked construction.

Onsite Controls Engineer Lead Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with Design and Delivery teams, engineer of record (EoR), General Contractors, and regulatory agencies to resolve controls-related issues involving safety, quality, cost, schedule, proposed changes, value engineering proposals, submittals, requests for information and other design related issues.
  • Collaborate with the Meta Design team and EoR to ensure design deliverables such as drawing sets, shop drawings, requests for information, submittals, studies, audits, calculations and reports meet requirements and service level agreements outlined in EoR performance requirements
  • Collaborate with the DSI to ensure design deliverables such as code, graphics, points list, hardware engineering, SCADA graphics/files, requests for information, submittals,and BIM issue responses meet requirements and service level agreements outlined in Design Delivery Log DDL and specifications.
  • Drive and hold teams accountable for design deliverables and engage on emerging requirements to ensure schedule requirements are met. Advise on opportunities to compress schedules wherever possible.
  • Proactively anticipate and mitigate potential quality issues. Monitor and resolve design quality issues to ensure Owner requirements are met.
  • Support design change cost estimates, provide insight on EoR and DSI contractual costs and changes, team resource allocations and changes, monitor and report on controls-related expenses.
  • In collaboration with stakeholders, engage in deliberate, forward thinking to identify and mitigate risks. Contribute to the risk register and proactively leverage to improve future products and projects.
  • Participate in bench tests, factory tests and other quality checks throughout the project life cycle and in partnership with cross-functional teams to ensure proper installation and commissioning of mechanical systems.
  • Leverage effective communications skills. Liaise between internal teams, consultants and contractors across projects and campus to ensure transparency, situational awareness of status, and timely resolution of issues.
  • Maintain current awareness of project knowledge repository, status, decision, and planning documents. Maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Provide regular project updates to internal stakeholders, information sharing, status of priorities, and feedback to EoR.
  • Drive scalable controls systems designs throughout Meta owned or operated data center spaces and support facilities.
  • Review and comment on controls design documents, specifications, DSI deliverables, commissioning scripts, and test plans.
  • Provide technical expertise and oversight to ensure the design and construction meet the Owner's requirements and industry standards for critical facility electrical systems including Manufactured Owner Furnished Equipment (MOFE).
  • Collaborate with other technical disciplines as required to ensure fully functioning, integrated systems.
  • Develop and support onboarding of new teammates to ensure continuity of design support.
  • Develop cross discipline knowledge to ensure continuity and build breadth and depth of the overall field design team.
  • In partnership with teammates, serve as controls subject matter expert, maintain situational awareness of campus and project level priorities, and provide timely resolution of existing and emergent issues.
  • Lead and participate in on-site meetings to facilitate resolution of critical issues related to controls design.
  • Support Facilities Engineering and Operations Team on knowledge sharing, technical guidance and system operation of Design throughout the project.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering or similar related field.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in the building automation system design, development and management.
  • Cross-discipline knowledge of critical facility systems.
  • Knowledge of thermodynamics and psychometrics.
  • Understanding of electrical systems including low voltage, high voltage, power generation, UPS.
  • Understanding of Modbus protocol to include TCP, and RTU.
  • Working knowledge of SCADA systems.
  • Knowledge of Networking Server/Client Workstations.
  • Familiarity with hardware, equipment, and software product development process.
  • Proven troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Effective presentation and communication skills.
  • Experience establishing working relationships and resolving interpersonal conflicts.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Previous owner's representative experience.
  • PLC programming experience.
  • Schneider Electric PLC/Unity Pro experience.
  • Aveva Platform SCADA understanding and working knowledge.
  • DCIM understanding and working knowledge.
  • Working knowledge of the data center technology stack: computer, network, storage, and software architectures

$167,000/year to $230,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits
