Advanced Materials Research Scientist

Redmond, WA

At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are currently seeking an Advanced Materials Researcher with expertise in sol-gel and nanoparticle chemistries, and a passion for technology and innovation to join our team, whose mission is to deliver state of the art materials for future hardware products for Meta at our research and development facilities.The position is full-time, requiring a PhD in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials engineering or similar degree. Candidates must have experience developing organo-metallic, metal-oxide, and hybrid organic/organometallic formulations processes for applications in new photoimageable resins, thin films and adhesives used in advanced optical devices. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic, cross-functional team and exhibit excellent communication skills.

Advanced Materials Research Scientist Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development of new inorganic coatings, such as sol-gels, nanocomposites and adhesives, including their synthesis, formulation, characterization.
  • Develop materials deposition processes and integration with patterning hardware to enable fabrication of near-eye optical components.
  • Build and manage collaborative relationships, both internally and externally, to support inorganic materials development and project deliverables.
  • Work closely with a cross-functional team to enable new optical devices based on novel inorganic materials and processing concepts.
  • Leverage detailed knowledge of the impact of formulation and process variables on product cost, and performance.
  • Translate optical, reliability, mechanical property requirements into appropriate chemistry, formulation, and process parameters with good understanding of relevant structure-property relationships.
  • Serve as expert in inorganic materials microstructural analysis, mechanical performance, photo-chemistry and photo-physics.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • PhD in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering or polymer chemistry
  • 3+ years of experience in organometallic and/or metal oxide chemistry.
  • 1+ years experience in thin film coating process and basic understanding of material structure-property-processing relationship.
  • 3+ years of experience with characterization of inorganic thin films using techniques like ellipsometry, SEM, TEM, XRD and XPS.
  • 1+ years of experience in materials mechanical characterization and optimization.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 3+ years of experience in an industrial Research and Development environment developing scalable processes.
  • Demonstrated experience working within a team towards sol-gel, nanoparticle synthesis and/or nanocomposite materials innovation.
  • Experience working with and characterizing porous materials.
  • Experience characterizing and tuning materials photo-chemistry and photo-physical properties.
  • Experience with photo-imageable resins and inorganic materials, and their underlying mechanisms.
  • Experience leading focused materials program with external partners.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying and growing partnerships and to manage sophisticated external engagements.
  • 1+ year of experience in delivering novel inorganic chemistries for optical device applications.
  • Experience with organic and inorganic optical materials development and formulations.
  • Track record of translating design parameters into material properties and establishing CTQs.
  • Experience in material reliability performance and test methods.
  • Experience in developing permanent materials for consumer electronics.
  • Experience in building thin films stacks especially for optical applications.
  • Experience designing and building custom experimental and analytical setups for materials testing and demos.
