General Summary of Position
Plans, coordinates, and directs the hospital-wide infection control program to minimize the risk of exposure to infectious and/or communicable diseases for patients, employees, staff, and visitors in accordance with the established hospital plans, state and federal regulations, and TJC standards. Evaluates the program and implements changes as needed to improve program and ensure compliance. Plans daily departmental operations, maintains appropriate staffing, training, and supervision. Plans and implements department budget and program priorities.

  • Develops department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. Ensures compliance with business unit policies and procedures and governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Develops and recommends department operating budget and manages resources according to approved budget.
  • Collects, analyzes, synthesizes, and organizes data for reporting to appropriate personnel, committees and regulatory agencies.
  • Designs, implements and maintains a hospital-wide system for prevention, investigation and control of infection within the hospital. Manages processes to reduce the risk of acquiring endemic or epidemic nosocomial infections in patients, healthcare workers and visitors.
  • Establishes goals for the Infection Control programs in conjunction with the Infection Control Committee, Safety Committee, or other related committees. Coordinates and is involved in setting quality standards related to hospital infections and in monitoring of infections.
  • Oversees the development or appropriate modification of policies related to hospital Infection Control and consults in regard to Occupational Health. Develops presentation of education to hospital associates regarding Infection Control policies, procedures and current practices and issues.
  • Provides consultation to managers in clinical and non-clinical areas. Works collaboratively with other departments to ensure infection control standards and practices meet hospital and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Provides leadership during infection outbreaks to quickly contain the spread of infection, to minimize harm and to support confidence in the system.
  • Reports communicable diseases to public health officials as required by regulatory standards. Maintains current knowledge base of infection control guidelines and practices to be incorporated into daily operations within the hospital.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and business unit in community outreach efforts.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams and maintains effective working relationships with other departments.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree in Nursing; required and
    • basic understanding and education related to infection control regulatory standards, microbiology, epidemiology, public health and in-depth knowledge of patient care practices. required


    Experience

    • Experience in infection control/hospital epidemiology required


    Licenses and Certifications

    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Valid RN license in the State of Maryland. required and
    • CIC - Certified in Infection Control CIC (Certification in Infection Control) preferred


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Investigative data collection and analysis skills.
    • Ability to use computer to collect data and prepare reports.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to exercise independent judgment.
    • Business acumen and leadership skills.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively interact with all levels of management, internal departments and external agencies.
    • Working knowledge of various computer software applications.



    This position has a hiring range of $100,588 - $190,340
