The Opportunity: 

Mattel is seeking an Associate Manager, Sustainable Packaging to join the Global Sustainability and Social Impact (GSSI) team in El Segundo, CA. Working in partnership with key teams across the business, this role will support the growth and success of Mattel’s packaging sustainability strategy, through actions including development of strategic roadmaps and implementation of impact measurement systems.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the sustainable packaging landscape, including global regulations and best practices, and will ideally have knowledge of or direct experience in packaging engineering. This program manager should be a self-starter who thrives in a collaborative environment and excels at putting strategies into action.

What Your Impact Will Be: 

Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Sustainability, the responsibilities of this role will include but not be limited to:

  • Building and executing a strategy to reach Mattel’s sustainable packaging targets, in deep collaboration with key teams such as Packaging Engineering, Procurement, Regulatory Compliance, and Quality
  • Building systems to drive enterprise-wide analysis of packaging sustainability performance
  • Serving as the key packaging sustainability expert for global and regional partners as well as cross-functional partners across the business
  • Maintaining and evolving content in guidelines and resources on Mattel's packaging sustainability attributes
  • Supporting the creation and delivery of educational resources to relevant teams on packaging sustainability
  • Monitoring updates, risks, and opportunities across partner requirements, industry trends, voluntary targets, and global regulations impacting packaging sustainability
  • Gathering and monitoring packaging data to drive progress to packaging sustainability goals
  • Collecting and providing packaging data inputs for annual sustainability and social impact reporting
  • Ad hoc projects and assigned duties, as necessary

What We’re Looking For:

  • Bachelor's degree in a sustainability-related field or packaging
  • 4+ years of professional experience working in a sustainable packaging role within a corporate sustainability or packaging engineering team
  • Understanding of global regulatory and industry-best packaging recyclability standards
  • Experience with areas relevant to packaging impact reduction such as sustainable material usage, sustainable design, life cycle assessment, and sustainability certifications
  • Understanding of global regulations impacting packaging sustainability (e.g. EU PPWR, global Extended Producer Responsibility schemes)
  • Highly collaborative and able to build relationships throughout an organization
  • Analytical problem-solving skills with an understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies
  • Strong data analysis skills; strong proficiency in using tools such as Excel, PowerBI, or Tableau with large data sets
  • Ability to efficiently handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, adapt to shifting priorities, and be very detail-oriented
  • Ability to work independently and with cross-functional teams
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to manage relationships, and excellent time management skills
  • Demonstrated a growth mindset by staying curious and continuously learning, embracing challenges, and improving themselves.
