The Principal Accountant - Sales & Use Tax plays a key role in ensuring compliance with all state and local sales and use tax requirements across Lowe's operating entities. This position supports the Manager of Indirect Tax Compliance in coordinating, facilitating, and executing the company's sales and use tax processes. The role is responsible for reviewing and approving monthly tax filings and payments, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and alignment with regulatory requirements.

This position requires strong attention to detail as well as technical expertise in sales and use tax, analytical ability to evaluate large data sets, and the communication skills to collaborate effectively with internal partners, external customers, and taxing authorities. The Principal Accountant also contributes to process improvements and supports special projects that enhance tax compliance and operational efficiency.

What you will do

Tax Compliance & Reporting

  • Coordinate and prepare sales and use tax returns for multiple jurisdictions, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Review and approve monthly sales, use, and related tax filings and payments for all filing entities.
  • Perform data retrieval and analysis to prepare accruals and process information for upcoming filing periods.

Accounting & Reconciliation

  • Research and analyze supporting documents for indirect tax compliance
  • Complete reconciliations of sales and use tax accounts, ensuring accuracy and timely resolution of variances
  • Manage workflows to meet deadlines and reduce financial and compliance risks.

Process Improvement & Automation

  • Maintain and refine existing processes while identifying opportunities to automate and streamline tax compliance functions.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to implement process improvements and system enhancements.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Partner with internal business functions to obtain required data and ensure alignment on tax-related activities.
  • Provide clear and professional communication to external customers, taxing jurisdictions, and internal stakeholders.
  • Support special projects and resolve complex, non-recurring issues related to sales and use tax.
  • Deliver excellent customer service to stores and other locations regarding sales and use tax inquiries.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field
  • 5 years of Accounting Experience
  • Intermediate to Advanced skills in MS office programs (Excel, Word, Access)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree
  • CPA
  • Lowe's finance or accounting experience
  • Experience using Oracle ERP
