Summary
Lincoln Electric has an outstanding opportunity for an R&D Engineer supporting our Digital Controls department within the Euclid, Ohio manufacturing headquarters. The R&D Engineer will design, implement, and maintain embedded software components for use in end products. Continually improve development techniques to create software more efficiently and reliably. What You Will Do
As an R&D Engineer, you will play a key role in the development/refinement of test methods, as applicable, to support new product development, product evaluations, and competitive benchmarking. Specific responsibilities include:
- Develop multithreaded controls with industrial Real Time Operating Systems and Embedded Linux using C and C++ languages.
- Developing software for communication with industrial automation networks (e.g. CAN, Ethernet/IP), Internet protocols (e.g. HTTP, FTP), and wireless (e.g. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth).
- Develops/refines test methods, as applicable, to support new product development, product evaluations, and competitive benchmarking.
- Assignments are broad in nature, requiring originality and ingenuity.
- Has appreciable latitude for unreviewed action or decision.
- Develop and maintain automated test setups and frameworks for embedded systems, including unit tests, integration tests, and system-level tests.
- Maintains records of all work in process and documents interim/final results in the applicable format; these include Project Definitions, Milestone Plans, ES Reports, Technical Reports, Project Tracking Progress Reports and presentations at meetings/seminar.
- Monitor and optimize system performance, scalability, and reliability in collaboration with the operations team.
- Troubleshoot issues in development and production environments, ensuring rapid resolution and minimizing downtime.
- Reading and interpreting schematics and component data sheets.
- May lead projects, ongoing activities, or objectives while acting as a resource for colleagues with less experience
- Interact with key stakeholders including marketing, suppliers, customers, distributors, and sales engineers to drive new product innovation.
- Assumes additional responsibilities as needed or directed in support of the Company’s 2025 Strategy.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Minimum four-year engineering degree is required. Electrical, Computer, or Software Engineering is preferred.
- Level III: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree required in an engineering field and 5+ years experience
- Level IV: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree required in an engineering field and 8+ years experience
- Strong familiarity with embedded systems architecture, design considerations, and hardware-software interactions.
- Industry experience writing C for embedded platforms.
- Strong understanding of version control systems (e.g., Git) and branching strategies.
- Solid understanding of testing methodologies and frameworks for embedded systems.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Initiative to take ownership of product designs.
- Selected candidate’s Job Level and Pay Grade will be determined based upon qualifications and experience.
Competencies
- Proficiency in C and C++ programming languages.
- Knowledge of Real Time Operating Systems and Embedded Linux.
- Experience in developing software for industrial automation networks, internal protocols, and wireless communication.
- Familiarity with IoT data collection and embedded graphical displays.
- Professional experience with TDD, writing unit tests, automated testing, and continuous integration type frameworks.
- Familiarity with Azure DevOps and Agile development practices.
