CDL Certified Bus Driver - IMMEDIATE NEEDD

Capital City Lighthouse Charter School is currently seeking Bus Drivers for the 2021-2022 academic year. This position is for an IMMEDIATE START.

Candidates must possess a valid Class B CDL with a "P", "S" and airbrake endorsements. Must meet the requirements under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations such as: be certified by a duly licensed medical practitioner as medically qualified and free of medical or physical conditions, which, absent reasonable accommodation, would limit safe operation of a school bus. Must possess strong customer service skills, including communication skills and the ability to manage large groups of people with varying needs.

This position will pay $16.00 an hour and can be full-time or part-time. Benefits are available for a full-time position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • The essential functions for our lead bus drivers are as follows:
  • Performs work is under the general supervision of the school principal.
  • Works with the vendor to establish bus routes and stops. Rides along on dry runs of the bus routes before the school year to determine the safety of routes and stops and make adjustments as needed.
  • Safely operates a passenger bus on an assigned route; adhering promptly to time schedule. Carries a timepiece.
  • Performs daily walk-around inspection on the outside and inside of the bus before accepting passengers; reports any defects to Family Coordinator and fills out a vehicle defect form.
  • Inspects the vehicle's tires, tests the brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, and water supply before beginning the routes.
  • Transports authorized students to and from school and related events in a safe and responsible manner; drivers must operate vehicles safely, sometimes in heavy traffic.
  • Supervises the loading and unloading of his or her bus at every pick-up and delivery point.
  • Prepares basic reports such as the list of students assigned to the route and a daily ridership log; daily mileage log; refueling records; mechanical problem reports, lateness reports and files reports promptly to the Family and Transportation Coordinator.
  • Operates 2-way radio system.
  • Notifies the Family and Transportation Coordinator by radio in the event of any traffic accident or medical emergency that involves a vehicle used in the performance of this Agreement so that the Family and Transportation Coordinator shall promptly advise the appropriate authorities and Lighthouse Academies' designee of the accident or emergency. Lighthouse Academies' employees shall not be required to perform any medical functions for passengers.
  • Maintains order the behavior of the children and completes and reports incidents of misbehaving students to the Family and Transportation Coordinator.
  • Assists and manages the needs of special needs students; monitors bus entry of wheelchair-bound passengers by observing approach to lift, operating lift control, observing entrance onto full length of bus, and securing belt for passenger safety.
  • Performs other duties as requested by the Family and Transportation Coordinator


PROFESSIONALISM
  • Wears an appropriate Lighthouse Academies identification badge, as provided by the school, while on duty.
  • Cleans the bus daily and washes it monthly.
  • Verifies that the bus has safety equipment from a predetermined list, such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency reflectors. In case of snow and/or ice, drivers must clean off vehicles.
  • Enforces regulations against smoking and eating on the bus.
  • Stays informed of all rules and regulations affecting the operation of school buses and standards of conduct.
  • Complies with all federal, state and local traffic laws while operating buses.
Skills/Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • One (1) to two (2) years prior driving experience, preferably driving in an urban environment.
  • Must possess a valid commercial driver's license as of the dates of service in accordance with the State and Federal law. Must be a licensed school bus operator.
  • Must meet the requirements under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations such as:
    • Be certified by a duly licensed medical practitioner as medically qualified and free of medical or physical conditions, which, absent reasonable accommodation, would limit safe operation of a school bus.
    • The main physical requirements include good hearing, at least 20/40 vision with or without glasses or corrective lenses, and a 70-degree field of vision in each eye. Drivers cannot be colorblind. They must be able to hear a forced whisper in one ear at not less than 5 feet, with or without a hearing aide. Drivers must have normal blood pressure and normal use of their arms and legs. They may not use any controlled substances, unless prescribed by a licensed physician.
    • The physical examination shall be conducted prior to employment and periodically thereafter, but at minimum every two years.
  • All drivers also must be able to read and speak English well enough to read road signs, prepare reports, and communicate with law enforcement officers and the public. In addition, drivers must take a written examination on the Motor Carrier Safety Regulations of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
  • A driver must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Must have and maintain excellent driving habits.
  • Prior to employment and from time-to-time thereafter, to the extent permitted by law, undergo such tests as may reveal, within a reasonable degree of medical or scientific certainty, the presence or absence of drugs or controlled substances in the body and such tests as may clinically reveal alcoholism or alcohol abuse. Negative findings for such tests shall be a condition of employment.
  • Must attend 15 hours of road driving training and 20 hours of classroom training.
  • Must possess strong customer service skills, including communication skills and the ability to manage large groups of people with varying needs.
  • Demonstrate mature, responsible attitude in dealing tactfully and congenially with the passengers; ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the general public
  • Considerable ability to communicate effectively and to follow both oral and written instructions
  • Excellent work history and attendance record.
  • Ability to provide lifting/moving assistance to disabled persons (some wheelchair-bound) as they are boarding/deboarding buses. Ability to reach around and wrap wheelchair straps around wheels for passenger safety.
