Middle Market Executive Technology Underwriter for Private Equity
Description
The Middle Market Executive Technology Underwriter for Private Equity is responsible for developing, growing and maintaining a profitable book of technology Property & Casualty business focused on private equity‑sponsored and PE‑backed technology companies inclusive of portfolio programs. This includes marketing, underwriting decision making, building mutually beneficial agent/broker and sponsor relationships, establishing a market‑facing leadership presence in the PE community, and applying underwriting tools, systems, and expert resources. The role also guides and mentors less experienced underwriters in PE‑specific underwriting, including regular employee coaching with feedback to the manager on progress.
Responsibilities:
Risk Selection:
- Review, rate, underwrite and evaluate PE‑sponsored technology accounts by qualifying sponsor and portfolio company risk profiles, understanding deal structure (buyouts, add‑ons, recapitalizations), leverage and transaction timing.
- Assess sponsor track record, portfolio management practices, common risk concentrations, post‑acquisition integration risk and exit strategies when determining insurability, premium, terms and conditions.
- Obtain necessary approvals and create/present tailored proposals that reflect PE deal dynamics (e.g., representations around transaction timing, coverage for management transitions, carve‑outs for jumbo M&A exposures). Negotiate and structure deals with an awareness of sponsor priorities and industry M&A cycles to secure profitable, long‑term placements.
- D emonstrate high responsiveness to Agents, Brokers and Private Equity deal teams; build trusted relationships with sponsor investment and portfolio management teams as well as placement brokers. Support agent/broker objectives by providing PE‑relevant underwriting guidance, participating in deal calls and diligence processes, performing site visits of portfolio companies and attending board or sponsor meetings as appropriate.
- Develop a strong personal brand in the PE ecosystem to build and maintain a long‑term, quality pipeline of PE‑sponsored opportunities and cross‑selling channels.
- Manage a sizable and complex book of PE‑backed technology business by analyzing portfolio composition by sponsor, sector, geographic and coverage concentration.
- Identify opportunities to improve growth, profit and diversification across sponsor relationships and execute targeted marketing plans to increase market share within the PE channel.
- Monitor transaction activity (acquisitions, dispositions, management turnover) within portfolio companies and adjust underwriting strategy, pricing, and coverage terms to reflect evolving risk.
- Document files to reflect thorough PE‑centric thought processes and decision making, including sponsor due diligence results, transaction documents reviewed, special endorsements required for deal timing, and any contingent exposures.
- Ensure comprehensive account reviews, sign‑offs and referrals comply with state regulations, letters of authority and underwriting guidelines while preserving a clear audit trail for sponsor and broker inquiries.
- Formally guide, mentor and coach underwriters and account analysts in PE‑specific technical and professional skills (e.g., evaluating sponsor track records, reading transaction documents, assessing covenant/leverage risk).
- Serve as an internal resource on PE deal dynamics and regularly update colleagues on PE market trends, major sponsor activity and lessons learned from claims or loss events involving PE‑backed companies.
- Actively participate in continuous improvement by generating suggestions and participating in problem solving related to underwriting tools, submission workflows and PE deal intake processes.
- Help refine underwriting guidelines, appetite statements and submission templates to better support efficient evaluation and placement of PE‑sponsored technology accounts.
- Degree in Business or equivalent typically required
- A minimum of 7 years expected, typically 10 years or more, of progressive underwriting experience and/or other related business experience
- CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred
- Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information in understandable written and/or oral directives to other persons in the organization for underwriting or training purposes
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholders
- Must demonstrate comprehension of most complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to properly manage or administer those issues
- Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business

Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
