The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.

Description
Manages all underwriting aspects of a surety territory or field office (typically considered large in scope) Accountable for quality and quantity of work, personnel, performance appraisals, new business acquisition, and profit and loss results of assigned territory or office. Is a significant contributor or primary preparer of budget and business plans, including marketing, underwriting, training and administration functions. Responsible for servicing the surety needs of customers typically in a large, multi-state territory or densely populated geographic region.

Responsibilities:

* Please note this is a range posting. Level of position and compensation based on experience.

Surety Underwriting Manager : $104,500-$320,100 . Annual FTO days: 20 days

Surety Executive Manager : $88,000- 246,400 Annual FTO days: 20 days
  • Hires, trains, and manages a highly effective organization/staff and expenses within line of business to meet business objectives , with profit objective being primary.
  • Develops, administers, and appraises performance objectives and development plans (mid-year/ annual review, regular 1:1, and coaching activities).
  • Drives workforce planning. Monitors quality of performance of staff by utilization of management reports, surveying financial files and communicating with customers. Identifies problems and implements corrective action and ensures alignment with business objectives . Makes compensation recommendations.
  • Delegates supervisory responsibilities as warranted but may remain accountable for ultimate management.
  • Participates in the development and delivery of targeted Surety training and ensures training delivery objectives are met for office. Responsible for ensuring that new underwriters are trained and/or supported by experienced underwriters with respect to technical underwriting issues, meetings with agents, contractors, etc.
  • Oversees evaluation and recommendation of credit levels provided to assigned customers actively participates in major underwriting decisions on assigned risks Ensures that new and existing accounts/principals continue to meet underwriting guidelines and standards for credit worthiness. Manages the portfolio book of business.
  • Manages all marketing/production efforts of staff within territory to secure new business, targets/goals as assigned.
  • Monitors utilization and accuracy of Surety systems applications for underwriting, marketing, and accounting needs of office.
  • Participates in Surety ' s annual strategic business planning process. Coordinates and monitors the implementation of annual business plan of assigned territory. Manages profitability, risk mitigation, growth strategies, metrics for specific accounts overall book of business.
  • Develops business relationships through industry related organizations and other activities to gain business intelligence of local market, enhance image of the Company and to promote marketing effectiveness. Oversees, as a resource, acquisitions of new business portfolio management.
  • Participates in special projects, as requested .
Qualifications
  • BA/BS Degree typically required ; Advanced Degree preferred. A minimum of 10 years progressive surety underwriting experience expected, including a minimum of 3 years of proven underwriting management experience, preferred. Proven analytical ability to evaluate underwriting risks within scope of responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information in understandable written and/or oral directives to other persons in the organization for underwriting or training purposes. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with agents, brokers, CPAs, bankers, attorneys, etc. required .
  • Must possess following skills, abilities, and attributes: strong leadership skills, development of people, strategic thinking, sustained effective portfolio management and profitable growth, communications skills, decision-making skills, results-oriented, industrious, innovative, problem-solving skills, coaching and mentoring skills, and negotiating skills.
