The Role:

Leidos heritage companies pioneered the development of air traffic control systems in the United States more than 50 years ago. While in the UK, our involvement in air traffic management began with NATS in the early 1990' starting with the development of the current in-service systems. Today Leidos systems handle 75 per cent of the air traffic in the U.S. and approximately 60 per cent of the world's air traffic. When it comes to air traffic safety and efficiency, our proven track record and industry-leading innovations make us the world's most trusted air traffic control partner.

We are now looking for a Software Engineering Lead, based primarily at Whiteley and the surrounding client sites, to join our growing team in delivering change and new functionality to the current air traffic systems.

As the software engineering lead, you will be responsible for a multi-functional team delivering a complex programme of transformation and functional changes. Your role will encompass managing the schedule and costs across multiple deliveries, change requests and new functional capabilities. Accountable to the engineer programme manager and reporting to the NATS customer you will own the delivery of the software design through to operational deployment and ongoing technical support.

You will lead a team of software engineers overseeing effective resources plans across several deployment points. Working closely with NATS to ensure longer term resourcing and viable succession plans are in place to maintain business stability throughout the lifetime of the system.

You must have a proven track record of a wide range of skills within the software domain and a software development background, preferably in a similar safety related environment. Including knowledge and evidence of the application of software engineering standards, principles and best practices. You must also have, or be eligible to acquire, SC clearance.

Typical Duties:

  • Plan and deliver against agreed software targets.
  • Manage day-to-day activities across a multi-disciplined team
  • Ensure engineering processes and software assurance standards have been followed
  • Contribute to architecture, design and software solutions / recommendations
  • Change and release management
  • Technical risk and opportunity management
  • Liaise with other disciplines i.e., systems engineering and formal test, as well as management and Team Leadership
  • Work Package Management
  • Weekly reporting - Critical Thread Review meeting

Required Skills:

  • Proven track record of successfully delivering change to national critical infrastructure systems
  • Experience leading teams through the complete delivery life cycle from bid through to operational delivery
  • Experience of systems engineering, software development, integration and test, using Waterfall and V model Development
  • Experience of using development environments related to 1GL through 3GL generation languages
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to provide clear technical direction
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and collaborate with other Stakeholders
  • Excellent verbal and written communication using e-mail, presentations and reports
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with the team, internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong time management and organisational skills

Desired Skills:

  • Experience in developing Software solutions using 1st (1GL) through 3rd (3GL) generation languages (e.g. ADA 83/95, C, C++)
  • Experience of delivering real-time and/or safety-related software
  • Knowledge of COTS integration technologies (e.g. Apache Camel, Apache Kafka) Experience of Atlassian tools (e.g. Jira, Confluence)
  • Knowledge of configuration management within a software engineering environment

Pay Range:

£60,100.00-£77,000.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary.
