As part of the Science and Technical Project Services Team, the Science Implementation Manager manages three main areas:

  • Leading the team of managers responsible for the successful implementation of Research Support Plans for events across the Antarctic. Successful management of these activities results in completion of research goals within scope and budget. The Science Implementation Team is responsible for developing the Research Support Plans (RSPs) outlining logistical support for each science or technical event.
  • Oversight of the laboratory support staff, equipment and facilities at all Antarctic locations, including laboratory managers and supervisors, research associates, equipment technicians and chemical specialists. Ensuring the Laboratories at each location are operating safely and efficiently to support the researchers using the locations and providing a long range plan for the laboratories and support.
  • Implementation management of one of the four geographic areas of science support: Field, South Pole, Peninsula, or McMurdo
  • This position works closely with the S&TPS Science Planning Manager to coordinate among ASC work centers to ensure integrated planning of science support each season. This includes coordination or oversight of Science Support meetings to review science and technical event support requirements each season, leading meetings with management and with the customer, overseeing the production of deliverables, representing S&TPS at ASC meetings and ensuring overall processes and procedures are followed as pertaining to the implementation of funded science. Within the structure of Science & Technical Projects Services, this role reports to the S&TPS Manager.

The anticipated salary range for this role will be between $120,000 to $140,000 annually.

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF's Office of Polar Program's Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

  • Vision: Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.
  • Mission: To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines. The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

The Challenge:

  • Management of the Science Implementation team, laboratory support staff, dive services team, and associated budgets (5-8 direct full time staff)
  • Development of annual research support plans with Science Planners, science Project Managers, work centers, and area management. Ensures team works collaboratively between all areas and with work centers for integrated support.
  • Responsible for delivery of Implementation deliverables and ensures appropriate processes are maintained in all documentation and implementation activities. Coordinates with Science Planners on delivery and accuracy of planning deliverables including Operational Notices, and the Allocated Resource Summary.
  • Ensuring close coordination with S&TPS stakeholders, NSF AIL Managers, NSF ANT Program Officers, and cross-functional areas for seamless science support. Facilitates requested changes between science teams, ASC, and NSF to ensure event scope is in line with NSF authorization.
  • Timely identification and elevation of science support issues within ASC and NSF in order to facilitate resolution before issues become an impediment to project success
  • Responsible for management and implementation of Science Implementation Key Performance Indicators that cover science and technical event health including deployment readiness, travel, cargo requirements, on-site support, and lessons learned.
  • Ensure that S&TPS support activities are performed in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, standards and codes imposed by the Antarctic Treaty and the U.S. Government. Interacts with National Science Foundation, their sub-contracting agencies, military personnel and other government NGO's in a professional and tactful manner.
  • Oversee staffing and budget management for Implementation managers including laboratory staff and equipment development/lifecycle plans, and coordinate recapitalization projects for science activities.
  • Implementation of events and management of the process for one of the four geographic areas: McMurdo, South Pole, Field or Peninsula.

What Sets You Apart:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or 5+ years of professional experience in a similar or equivalent role.
  • Knowledge of research laboratory operations and requirements.
  • Documented budget development, process management, and change control on projects and level of effort support experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent team leader with the ability to integrate teams cross-functionally.
  • Familiar with field science and with the activities associated with deployment of science to conduct field research.
  • Able to adapt to changing schedules and priorities.
  • Experience leading change efforts and implementing new systems or processes.
  • Strong leadership, organizational and communications skills.
  • Ability to review and understand scientific proposals; write and review scientific and technical documents.
  • Ability to assign and track work, maintain schedules, and train staff.
  • Strong analytical and proven divergent thinking skill sets
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work collaboratively and professionally with peers, management, grantees and customers.

You May Also Have:

  • Experience with field work, science support, vessel based science or remote logistical support
  • Experience managing research laboratories
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 4 years in polar science support or equivalent remote environment

Pay Range:

Pay Range $104,650.00 - $189,175.00
