We are looking for a Marine Engineer with and interest in maritime safety to support the Systems Safety Engineering team for their growing customer demand. This is a full-time position and individual may be able to work fully remote.

Providing system safety program management and engineering support to government clients including integrating all system safety domain areas; environmental, safety, occupational health, and software, into ship design and acquisition activities by reviewing contractor plans, reports, and other products in support of new construction ship design

Primary Responsibilities

  • Establishing system safety requirements, ensuring compliance to those requirements, identifying hazards and acceptable risk resolution, and safety testing/verification
  • Providing hands-on technical system safety support by performing system safety reviews of designs, prototypes and as-built production systems; and perform the appropriate hazard analyses to ensure that risks are mitigated to an acceptable level and mitigation measures are effectively incorporated into system designs.
  • Conducting system safety research and studies including the development of plans, pilot testing, data collection and analysis and reporting.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary engineering and system safety working groups and working independently to identify and resolve system safety issues and ensure customer needs are met.
  • Supporting execution of hazard analyses/risk assessments (e.g., operating and support hazard analysis (O&SHA)) of loading, movement, handling and stowage of ordnance and ship integration of combat/weapon systems, including (but not limited to):

    • Collecting and reviewing legacy artifacts (e.g., hazard assessment reports (HARs), technical manuals, maintenance requirement cards, RADHAZ reports, and other technical data)
    • Reviewing engineering change documents for identification of potential system safety hazards as related to ship integration of weapons/combat systems and ordnance handling, movement, and stowage.
    • Participating in System Safety Working Groups (SSWGs)
    • Developing HARs
    • Managing/tracking hazards to resolution/risk acceptance.
  • Providing general support in the development of technical data packages (TDPs) for the Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board (WSESRB) (e.g., compiling data/documentation, technical writing, documenting meeting minutes and other administrative duties).

Basic Qualifications

  • BS in Engineering, Naval Architecture, or an equivalent Engineering Discipline
  • Less than 1+ year of Marine engineering experience on Naval and/or Commercial shipping vessels
  • Knowledge and experience with developing ship design specifications and familiarity with ship design classifications (ABS).
  • Experience in providing technical meeting support.
  • Proficiency in standard MS Office suite and CAD.
  • US Citizenship and an Active US Secret Clearance or the ability to obtain a US Secret Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in software development and software engineering.
  • Experience with surface ships in US Navy, US Coast Guard and other DOD and maritime environments preferred.
  • Familiarity with the DOD/DON acquisitions process and experience in supporting large programs.
  • Experience in applying MIL-STD-882E and performing the 'tasks' and hazard analysis outlined in the standard to the design of systems; specification development and identification of safety critical items/functions; and experience with hazard analysis techniques (FMEA, FTA, HAZOP, etc.).
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA OP-4, Ammunition and Explosives Safety Afloat requirements and NAVSEAINST 8020.6E, DoN Weapon Systems Explosives Safety Review Board
  • Familiarity with the development and management of hazard management/tracking systems.
  • Experience with hazard and risk identification, assessment and management software packages.
  • Ability to meet the Principal for Safety (PFS) requirements outlined in the Naval Sea Systems Command Instruction 5100.12B (System Safety Engineering Policy) within 24 months of hire.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $53,950.00 - $97,525.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
