Jr. Structural Engineer
Description
Leidos Gibbs & Cox is the largest independent naval architecture and marine engineering firm in the United States. Since our founding in 1929, 24 classes of combatants and nearly 7,000 vessels have been built to Gibbs & Cox designs. We proudly support military and commercial clients in the U.S. and internationally with all phases of marine design, construction, and lifecycle management. Our passion is solving our customers' 21st century maritime challenges with quality and integrity.
Position Overview
We are seeking an Entry-Level Marine/Maritime Structural Engineer to join our interdisciplinary engineering team. In this role, you will contribute to complex ship design projects by supporting senior engineers, performing analyses, and developing documentation for both U.S. Navy and commercial maritime vessels. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates or early-career engineers looking to build their expertise in structural engineering within the marine industry.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist in solving structural engineering challenges on complex ship design projects under the guidance of senior engineers.
- Prepare technical deliverables such as specifications, analysis reports, calculations, briefings, status updates, and test procedures.
- Perform technical analyses using U.S. Navy specifications, Design Data Sheets, Technical Manuals, and commercial classification society rules.
- Conduct quality assurance reviews of calculations, models, drawings, and reports.
- Collaborate and interact with government representatives, industry partners, and interdisciplinary engineering teams.
Candidate Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Must be able to obtain a Security Clearance (current clearance preferred).
- Bachelor's degree (BS) or higher in Engineering (Naval Architecture, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or related discipline).
- Ability to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team on ship design projects.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to apply technical specifications and engineering methods.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for developing reports, presentations, and calculations.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present technical ideas clearly in both written and verbal formats.
- Experience through coursework, internships, or prior employment involving U.S. Navy ships and/or commercial maritime vessels is strongly preferred.
- Exposure to developing or reviewing engineering deliverables such as calculations, specifications, or design models is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools or structural modeling software.
- Familiarity with U.S. Navy technical standards, specifications, and commercial maritime classification society rules.
At Leidos, we don't want someone who "fits the mold"-we want someone who melts it down and builds something better. This is a role for the restless, the over-caffeinated, the ones who ask, "what's next?" before the dust settles on "what's now."
If you're already scheming step 20 while everyone else is still debating step 2... good. You'll fit right in.
